The Coin of the Sages

The Coin of the sages is an alchemist’s gift from heaven. It turns up in any crucible of life and relationships.  We polish our old copper coins (Venus) till they shine as the golden Sun.

In an old alchemy journal I found this entry …  delicately it interfaces the timeless diary of today.  “The Glory of the World” and “The Golden Tripod” which are quoted, are 17th century writings in the Hermetic Museum library.  The Tarot keys discussed are in the Builders of the Adytum deck.

BOTA Tarot Tableau: three septenaries, seven columns: the keyboard. This deck is published by the Builders of the Adytum in black and white: each student colours and thereby empowers his or her own deck, following the Builders’ strict guidelines. The colours of the Keys have audial resonance also.

The ripe Priestess  sometimes makes Hermit’s Mountain seem remote … winnowing out error and shattering the Tower.   These three Keys form a vertical column in the BOTA Tarot Tableau. In fact they represent the bud, the bloom and the bursting of the seedcase as from chrysalis … in nature and in any creative process.

Beginning my Sapphire Tree painting for a book cover:  I started as blind egoists do on the dirty surface.   This should grow organically from centre as a mandala — not in one rush like a face.   Sapphire means liquid pale blue fire.   The 72 leaves should be a delicate tracery of  seminal wave connections in the white fire around and between the Menorah branches. Working from the centre outwards, let it grow.   Here is a dirty pool.   Cleanse to begin with, its centre.

Paul Foster Case invites me again to dip into the alchemical forests of “GLORY OF THE WORLD”.   When reading these, fountain gently with them up and down, restoring the synchrony of heart-body which is today collapsed and tired.

On page 61 it discusses the COIN OF THE SAGES.   I can see this white Coin from the sky, so bright that I cannot see yet what is impressed upon it.

Our Stone has its head in the earth and its root in the air.   I read alchemical texts not with my Hod but with the breath, with my inside.   Then they glow.   It says the Spirit delights in nothing so much as its own Soul and its own body.  Delight is another word for the Higher Will; be comforted.   It is minted pure and bright and white within the dark.   Begin from the centre
but let it descend first from the white sun.   The work of

the Priestess lets it descend.   10am, School of the Soul.

September 2018 – The evolution of those two drawings (1987 and 2003) is my life today –  the heart beats within the tapestry.  A house to paint in, which I invoked  15 years ago and forgot about, recently materialised;  last week I beeswaxed the floor and began work there with a new Tree of Life – see end of this post.  I have not painted for years!

..

2003 continued:

Hurly Burly welcomed her Mum so kindly last night at the Garrick wine-bar – Mum was feeling lousy because she’s forgotten how to paint.   HB too has been re-discovering how to paint — the light came in through her window.   I had a nice time there where she works,  but ate and drank too much, which paralyses my gut for the night.   But to read the “Golden Tripod” now, sprays white light into the Garrick; and I was introduced to a curly Paddy who has 400 (?) paintings he said he bought and collected in his house — the secret of a good painting is it invites you to take a walk into it.   Tall tales do not matter in conversation.   On my right, as I tackled warm goat’s cheese and fennel swordfish and a big glass of wine, sat Marta’s sister with her hyperactive three-year-old son Adam enjoying himself all over the counter with his tiny neat brown hands.

Enough:   now focus on Basil Valentine.

It is impossible for Yesod to sperm the Stone.  Yesod cannot remember how.  The sperming comes down through antakharana – the pipeline – and is observed and — as perception of it refines and begins to dispel the obscuring cloud — obeyed with joy: as in p.45 in the Golden Tripod.   Note the Source of the Priestess’s stream and her receiving element.   Male and female seed are the One thing, the Child within.   Wherever there is joy in creation is this natural intercourse of the Air, the secret fire, the dew.   The Earth is only the invisible thing that attracts union.  Out of no thing blossoms unicity.

Seek not our Stone in substances which cannot stand the test of fire.   Seek it in the incombustible oil that is the fire itself that ever renews and fattens the land.   It grows and gently shines and increases like a plant.   It increases in that it prevails.   Through all darkness, the stem glows and shines.

September 2018

Here is the beginning of my new Tree painting – just sketching out Malkuth, Yesod, Hod, Netzach in the Lower Face, based on  carvings of the Companions around Chartres cathedral;  Archangel Rafael in Hod has no face yet.  I hope for it to combine thematically the medieval flowering of Islamic alchemists and Christian sages, the Star, Cross and Crescent, the child and parenting, the cosmic serpent of our DNA, nature and the fountain of life … as the journey begins, let it lead me where it will.

Tarot Keys Tower, Star and Moon, representing the paths on the Tree which converge on Netzach

These three Tarots tell me a story:  the cracking of the seedcase, the watering of the shoot, the evolutionary journey to ripen.  When the Tower falls, it reveals its inversion, a well.

I was thinking along the archetypal lines of 2016, 2017 … and today brought a link to a colour meditation on the same theme, which feels timely:
http://colourconscious.com/aura-soma/2017-a-year-for-the-star/   … “By listening to our star and living our truth we take responsibility for the only part that is truly in our hands …” (Dominic Yeoman)

The ‘Philosophus’ chapter in Paul Foster Case’s The True and Invisible Rosicrucian Order offers 6 keys for lovers of wisdom to contemplate further: Death, Star, Chariot … Temperance, World, Sun children.

Arranged here in a six pointed star – the Seal of Solomon – is a visual analogy  that natural man is the seed-case of the spiritual man.  I’m a dull stick these days.  “Philosophus” means cultivating clarity, and the word is derived from Philo Sofia – lover of wisdom … “who might be compared to a man who has learned to read the architect’s plans. The house is yet to build.”

What is clarity?   Clarity is a process of alignment, perhaps a desire to contribute to a positive humanity, a collective Lighthouse.

This morning  I seemed to be mouldering in a puddle – recovering from seasonal flu.  Then I thought of the Lighthouse:  a reflective focus.   Its shaft, its beam, penetrates the ocean depth and crosses the sea.  If I focus on that and give it time, my thought moves from fog into ‘precision tools’, into the quickening of community.   As I open into interior silence, I wait:  have faith: give it space.   The lenses above and below, converge.

The lighthouse shaft underwater, releases a flow of strength. Pictures are resurrected, taking on vibrance and meaning.   “May God be resurrected and his foes perish …  (Psalms).  As wax melts before the flame, as smoke is driven by the wind …”

RESURRECT … and my dark sloth slithers off the branch.  There is a golden sound now in the Archangel pouring quintessential water and fire onto muddy Leo and Scorpio creatures … beneath the shadow of his iridescent wings and rainbow …  dipping his toe in the bottomless brook:  “Guidance is not a mere article of faith.  It is a matter of daily personal experience.”

bota-key-19-sun

When it connects, it feels like scales dropping off as the Sun dawns.  There is a beautiful enigma with the androgyne who dances within the laurel of the World, and with the Children in their field:  they sparkle through the dew.   The smiling sunflowers all (except one – ) turn their faces to the children – the Seed of the Sun.  One sunflower-head watches the Sun, for form’s sake.  The childrens’ whole sexuality is in bud.  My fields are irrigated with the golden flow of their joy.  The world is darkened, but so is the closed interior of the unbroken seed.   The seed breaks into halves and into children.

In a nutshell, duties to life and community are perceived in a flash, which take time, labour and obscurity to realise.

..

The dawn comes.  I have to approach it again and again and again.  To repeat by turning back the page to see what I wrote before – or what anyone else wrote – is not sufficient.  The key is turned afresh, to enlighten.  I have no illusions the enlightenment will last but it doesn’t matter:  it will come again. The Oracle never clones itself.

The other 3 Keys (in the sextet above, in this post) are Death, the Star and the Chariot.   Death scythes the fertile ground.  The Star waters it.  The Chariot stands like a hyacinth or … a lighthouse with its keeper inside.

Go into the lamp room with its lenses and reflectors.  It is simple.  Light a candle, light my fire and let it travel across the sea.   Light it with a match or knock a spark from two flints.   The spark is within the stone (I wrote snow), like the flame within the wood, the cream within milk, the Upanishad.   The spark is Netzach on the Tree, the mating game … only connect.

In the hells on earth, there are gleams here and there, which give an individual  some strength to carry his child or to care for another;  persons leave their homes and go out into the thick of it.  The manna is directed into the core of Hope in the human seed.

What is the Star of Hope?   Hope is not an abstract.  Hope is the capacity to transfigure a dark situation into a light one.   Hope illumines the dark and turgid, and dispels hatred and fear.   One moment I am dead.  The next moment I am alive and kicking.   This is Hope.

This is what is meant by the Star …  the star the Magi followed.  Hope is an irrigation, converting desert into orchard and oasis.  It can begin nowhere else but here.

The Golden Tripod of Basil Valentine – Reflection

Dragon of Hermes Trismegistus

..

Alchemy is child’s play, God’s game in the garden.  The human physical and existential organism is wondrously subtle and infinitely textured, more to be breathed, yearned and died with, than to be figured out.  It always drew the shy and enquiring alchemical minds to the mystery, like bees to the flower.

Here are some playtimes and discoveries around Basil Valentine’s “Golden Tripod” in the Hermetic Museum 17th century.  They dropped into my delighted journal for poem-making, a number of years ago, and asked for a little revision now.

..

Alchemical Journal, 26 February 2002

The definition Paul Foster Case gives for the “Incombustible Oil” of alchemy is: “It cannot be found in the animal kingdom because there its nature is too completely veiled. It is incombustible because no fire can burn the essence of fire. It is mineral because it is the essential substance for whatever is mined.”

The incombustible oil is the living fire itself, the pure First Matter. It is only when the lower mercurial imp gets hold of it that it thickens and dies. If a Narcissus beholding the pure spring – spirit, soul and salt balm – weds it to himself and becomes ‘so proud he hardly knew himself’,  un-firing oils of pride and small purpose are bred – a cold bed.

We should sing and eat the First Matter and digest it and let it pass through our gut – it is not enough to merely read or think it. Sound vibrates into wave patterns. Thoughts are things. Spiral, whorl, desert storms and water pass through sand; ripples coalesce, grains are atoms, sand dunes travel like stars. You can tap the sand on a membrane or whisper to it, forming patterns:  the Glory of the World?

Alchemical apperception is a terrific amount of beauty to hold. When tired or too high or tense or worried or complaining, the third eye doesn’t operate. It needs nourishment and daily practice. The amount of beauty in Aleph breaks and shatters a conventional organism;  the whole cellular body must change, to confect it.

Blood carries the substance which spirals through our bodies – the distilled moisture of the moon to marry to the light of the sun.

The One Thing, heart’s desire, spirals towards us by gravitation – a mental power (condenser). Self AWARENESS directs gravitation. Without this, firmly planted, every effort or prayer is flimsy. Key One in the nuptial chamber ‘flows’ through the Tower of alchemy as gold and steel. With consciousness, an adept commands gravitation.

1955 with Daniel at Breck

Recall childhood: Daniel the donkey in the Yorkshire moors, the smell of the sack tied round him in winter; and the Doctors beach near Hartland in North Devon: hot sun, great  rocks like up-ended books, sea-channels, the taste of joy, hunger and thirst, a piece of cheese for lunch, a scorching sunburn all day long between my shoulder blades. Recall some of the flavours in your own …

The desire nature is situated at the well of the throat; the core of human sexual desire is  here, as well as hunger or longing. Within the belly it manifests. To change the copper into white, raise it to the moon centre behind the root of the nose and by creative imagination (key Three, Empress) to the level of clear recollection (key Two, Priestess).

Our gold is the same as our Stone – the stars of our inner heart, invisible to the eye’s external seizure.

Its female principle is the subconscious power to be fertilised and to multiply.

In the East it is said that without his shakti, Siva the Purusha cannot move or manifest. The King is stillness. His Queen is the centrifugal life-giving force of that stillness. The King is silence. His Queen is the sound-wave. The King is water. His Queen is the ripple of a breeze, a wave or tempest.

The spirit, the soul and the astral correspond to the three lower Worlds, whose holy place of meeting is Malkuth of Beriah, Tifareth of Yetzirah and Kether of Assiyah. Here the anointing takes place.

Reflect on thought forms, ways of thinking, of feeling and relationship: responsibility with the sharp edges. Be clear.

In Svetasvatura Upanishad it says: Even as fire is not seen in wood and yet by power it comes to light as fire, so Brahman in the universe and in the soul is revealed by the power of OM – primordial sound. The soul is the wood below that can burn and be fire, and OM is the whirling friction-rod above. Prayer is the power that makes OM turn around, and then the mystery of God comes to light.

God is found in the soul when sought with truth and self sacrifice, as fire is found in wood, water in hidden springs, cream in milk, and oil in the olive.

There is a Spirit who is hidden in all things, as cream is hidden in milk, and who is the source of self knowledge and self sacrifice.

..

..

And now my digest of the story in Basil Valentine’s “Golden Tripod”.  I put the Mage’s words into free verse.  The story begins:

“Take a quantity of the best and finest gold – the best of your inner treasure – and separate it into its component parts (Four Worlds of the tree of Life), by love of the Art. Do it the way an anatomist dissects the human body. Very carefully, change your gold back into the currency before it became the world’s gold: go upstream.

“You shall find the seed – beginning, middle and end – from which our gold and its female principle are derived. You shall discover the pure and subtle spirit, the spotless soul and the astral salt and balsam.  When these three are united, we may call them the mercurial liquid: Hermetic mind.

..

BOTA key 20 Judgment detail LVX

..

“This water was examined by Mercury, found by him in his excitement to be pure and spotless, and espoused by him as his wife. Of the two was born an incombustible oil; Mercury became so proud he hardly knew himself. He put forth eagle feathers, devoured the slippery tail of the Dragon (South node) and challenged Mars to battle.

“Captured by harsh planetary aspects, our Mercury was jailed by Vulcan, smith of the metals, until a woman should liberate him. All the planets led by Saturn, agreed he was a scoundrel and must be destroyed and burnt. Vulcan performed the execution. But the beautiful Moon appeared in the sky, all attired in silver and waters, and pleaded heartbreakingly for her husband the Sun – the secret Fire – trapped in Vulcan’s prison through conjunction with crafty Mercury. He, the fire in the oil, could not glow or burn. Their child could not warm the heart and grow. Lady Moon, like our Mother Isis, pleaded for her dismembered Osiris.

“Venus too arrived, in her most beautiful dress, and wheedled with Vulcan in the Chaldean tongue – language of astrologers – “A woman will liberate the prisoner from planetary deadlock, sweeten the aspects so they yield!” – But Vulcan (her husband in the Greek mythology) turned to her his deaf ear.

“Then the skies opened. Out poured a mighty beast; with many thousands of young. Like a tidal wave it drove Vulcan before it, swept him forth; and opening its great mouth swallowed also Venus its own fair mother. It roared: ‘I am born from her. Then she received into herself my seed and filled the Earth with it. My mother and my wife the same, her soul is devoted to mine, of one bond; so I must eat, replenish my own with her blood.’

The blood is the soul. The creature is born, weds and consumes the matrix, the One materia. Its voracious offspring followed it into ‘a certain chamber’, eating up all the incombustible oil also, digesting it with the greatest ease and propagating into every part of the world.

..

..

“The learned men and elders of the violet land all gathered, perplexed. Then a Great Mage came forth into their circle. Is he the higher Mercury, quicksilver of the wise? He wore the girdle of life – the serpent swallowing its tail – around his loins, snowy locks, silver beard and crown of elven jewels. His feet were bare, and his words penetrated to the depth of the human soul.

He summoned silence, then spoke:

Awake, and open your eyes to behold light
where before they beheld darkness.
Two stars God-given lead men to wisdom.
Gaze upon them steadily
and follow their lights to the secret of knowledge.

“The bird Phoenix from the sunny fiery South at high noon (midheaven)
plucks out the mighty beast’s heart from the East at dawn (ascendant).
Give the beast from the East wings
that it feel itself the same as the bird from the South.”

..

The tight right-angle aspect or planetary ‘square’ is eased by unifying the character of the protagonists. Like the Bird of Light, the animal nature must allow itself to be destroyed to be reborn. It must dissolve and meld with spirit at the point where they converge. The spirit needs the power to manifest that is in earth, the dreaming earth.

..

The Mage Continued …

The animal from the East must lose its lion’s skin and wings.
Then it must plunge in primordial salt tears of the vast ocean
and emerge thence in renovated beauty.

“Plunge your volatile mind, your demons and distractions
in a deep spring whose waters never fail.
Their Mother is hidden within the spring.

Let them become as she.
Let them be born of Three,
of spirit, soul and salt, thrice distilled and great.

Hungary is my native land …”

..

Silence falls

and an earlier fragment from my Poems of Eclipse …

… I was born

among poppies, spiked speedwell and wild grasses,
primeval plain of sky and thistle flowers
ere the zig zag Tisza river, led by a hungry donkey, flowed …

In hypnos, Princess Erzebet’s little goldfish lost
when the royal Danube spilled
was in the dreaming Tisza found,
where fishers whittled reed flutes in the sun for grandchildren
and – telling tales of war in which they fought,
sucked mightily at long stemmed pipes
with yellow tassels.

..

Karmic Themes

I saw a path through almond trees
along the violet crease of your eyelid,
to the land you say you could enter.

I saw in silvery light that gleams around the clouds
wild horses roam, breath taking, undulating
floating patchwork cloth of meadows
whose margin into faery fades.

At home my pebbles, pictures and old porcelain
mismatch the elven valour of Arpad:
my grey and shabby fields – old Angol travelling east –
in sunrise drown.

Like all that lives,
we are a metaphor.

The river current does not concern itself with local agonies
of wave systems estranged, which in fast flowing course
carrying Karmic seed, collide, and through each other pass
the rivers of rebirth in seminal flood; but only with awareness.

A curve of the current is seen,
pushing at and into the rocky bend
while carrying sky-light, leaf-mould, colours of stone
and silt along a bed of generations to the sea.

The waters here scour deep and fast
deep fish of life to see: my urgency awakes.
Children of gods, in metaphor long buried gold
emerge from the rock, they are bursting to be told.

Their wake is somewhere in the curacy
of long years of tales from no man’s lland
on rock ledges shelved and waiting in a dark room.
No man is an island. We fall deep.

We are ignored by the main stream of the dreaming world,
for the glory of pure gold,
in the rain on a sunlit street or rock
has no currency to be held.”

..

Then the Great Mage went on:

Hungary is my native land.
The sky and the stars are my habitation.
The earth is my spouse.
Though I must die and be buried,
yet Vulcan causes me to be born anew.
Therefore Hungary is my native land
and my mother encloses the whole world.”

..

TRINOSOFIA sketch 1

..

Touching the riverbed … the smith Vulcan is a driver, he drives the sword through fire and water. Vulcan’s wife Aphrodite – Venus – encircles with her womb the sky and waters.

The Great Mage is the Sun, the spirit of fire and renewal, to find in ourselves. Fire lives in the twig as combustibility, and in the rock as gems and precious stones. Fire lives in the rock as coal and as amber from long buried trees. Fire is present, latent, sleeping and awake: the heart of the earth and mystery of our blood’s kindling, body warmth and auric radiance. Fire is the heart of a star in the rose, the buried Sun whose veins are twigs and trees, their fraction in the sky. Their cumulonimbus flints convecting one another, strike sparks, to flash and flow as lightning to kindle the earth.

The thunder is the voice of the secret fire. It pierces and breaks the heavens. The fire spills forth, seizes and is gathered into dark lumps of earth. And the earth must then with wings soar heavenward, until singed it falls and drowns.

Reduce the Red Sea by boiling. The earth reappearing is ‘all in all’, re-appareled in the meld and heart of every element. By this, the dragon is released and contained. It shall ‘ascend with wisdom from Earth to Heaven, then again descend to Earth, and unite together the powers of Above and Below. Let all ignorance and obscurity fly from you.’

..

merlin guide

When everyone there had started to understand, the Mage spoke some more:

“Let that which is above be below,
let that which is visible be invisible,
let that which is below become that which is above,
let the invisible become visible, and the impalpable, palpable.

“Here is the perfection of our Art
with no defect or diminution.

“That in which death, life, destruction and resurrection dwell
is a round sphere with which the goddess of fortune drives her chariot,
imparting wisdom’s gift to men of God.
Its name here on earth and for human understanding, is the All in All.

“Let him who would know All in All
give earth great wings and let it fly up through the air
to heaven’s region – BERIAH.
Then singe its wings with fierce heat – divine AZILUTH –
and make it fall into the Red Sea – YETZIRAH –
and there be drowned.

“Dry up the water with fire and air –
evaporate Yetzirah by Aziluth and Beriah –
till earth – ASSIYAH – reappears as All in All.

“If you cannot through this process find it,
look around you. Look on nature.
The All in All is gravity of all metals and minerals derived from salt and sulphur.
Their mutual attraction is born of mercury.

bhakti

“More I may not say
since all is comprehended in the all.

“My brothers, you are blessed
if hearing the wise, you find this Stone,
its power to heal and regenerate leprous and imperfect bodies.

“It has kept the vital fire in me so long alight
that I weary of life and long to die
yet cannot

“for I am bound to render thanks unto God’s wisdom,
mercy and gracious Gift
now and ever more. Amen.”

..

..

And the old man vanished. And all who heard him went back to their homes and meditated on his words, day and night.

Saint Germain-Merlin

..

The Great Mage was Master Rakoczy, Saint-Germain. He appeared also in medieval Britain, through Merlin’s form.   In alchemy, the body through giving thanks and through repeated drenching in the fountain of life, becomes intangibly yet effectively cleansed and spiritualised. It acquires a form of renewal without having to die and start all over again. Old murks are cleared out at source, as the atomic lattice through Spirit is redefined.

It is a homeopathic process of gradual tincture. Slowly, steadily, the molecular web and cellular memory are modified through purification by the inner fire. Their composition is altered to support the higher frequencies, while maintaining the same general appearance. Robust physical health might not be inevitable, yet it is a by-product of this kind of work, particularly if not itself the main aim.

The Key to the golden Life is lightly touched in all matters.

I dreamed this morning I was shown four jars containing coloured liquid. I cannot recall the first two from left to right; but the third one’s contents were radiant apple-green and the fourth one was reddish-brown and cloudy like pale old paint-water. This one was ‘humanity’. A voice came, at some point: “Darkness it hath, that is good, (but) darkness it is not.”

There are wonderful names which awaken me with bells. Beleriand, Belisarius, the Bells of Rachmaninov and of Liszt. There was a small grey dream-pony a few weeks ago called Bellarus: and in Tolkien’s Farmer Giles of Ham, Bellomarius was the greatest of all the dragon slayers in the realm.

My activity all this life is to clean the cupboard. I spent a long time looking for someone there. The Magyar puszta symbolises a clear and open horizon within, filled with sky. Like Narnia through the wardrobe, it has no hedge. A door opens to it at the end of Liszt’s “Christus” when Jesus rises from the tomb. There is a captive inside, who strives to come forth, rattling chains, moving stones. An opus of his soul lay unread on shelves, buried under sheaves of litany and litigation.

There is someone to see right through and beyond, to a common source. There is a tree filled with white blossom in my window.

This post waited in my Drafts for some considerable time!  I was kept busy with my book of the Tarot Arcana (from which this writing arose), and with finding out, and with living. Now I recall the place of rest: shabat shalom … and baruch, the blessing.

Our dear old friend Issy Benjamin “left the market place on Sunday evening 25 October, and has gone home. Heaven is home and earth is the marketplace. We are in constant passage between the two (African proverb).”  He was nearly ninety.

The Star, the Cross and the Crescent!  (See the vimeo above).  Develop in the inner and outer life the golden seed – each of the middle eastern prototypes holds my deep affiliation, life-effort and love.  As agonizing as the conflict at present is, so shall it one day flower and unite humankind.

Hidden behind an angle there was a skylight, and this reminded me of a dream I once had, in which were windows cut through the ceiling to Adonai – in the shapes of the Hebrew letters – through them you may talk to god without intervention or interference or screen of speech.  Why?  Because those apertures from above and below are cut through stone, the shape of the language and its covenant.  Nothing else but the Law, the cosmic Torah, can be spoken or heard through them.  And so it is with all languages through which God spoke – Arabic, Persian, Phoenician, Egyptian, Sanskrit – our origin.

Always go from where you are right now, because access to the sacred architecture is a given;  it is not seen all at once, it grows on you as soon as you surrender your nature to the joy of the gift.

When a soul literally sheds the physical embodiment, he or she is present in any time and space right now, to tune in with.

islamic patterns 1 :Keith Critchlow

Hexagram, from Keith Critchlow’s ‘Islamic Patterns’

When the centre is open, the six directions through my core are simultaneous.  Turning to face them, is something I should remember and not forget during the day. The KABOD, the glory of God has this private stealth, and may be rediscovered at any moment. The expression ‘The chosen people’ may derive from what we choose to meet each other with – the scroll we unroll and open to each other in the eager reading of the Book.  It derives from ‘choosing’ to connect with Issy and with other souls now beyond the box of naming, yet vital in their essence.  There is an intimacy of the emerald table – as above, so it grows below:  the currency ascends through the descent.

I feel and endure the descent, but later on like yeast it rises and leavens the loaf, spreading it far and wide.

Diagram, cube, weathercock

My solar atom is a weathercock – a cube of space;  the six directions N E W S and up and down;  the holy hexagon, the cube of Solomon, a metaphysical spatial reality.  As soon as I am aware of it, I know my purpose, and gently it flows into concentric raindrop circlings of humankind:  I know it and I become still.   I become still not with my intention which is a confused and muddy pool, but as soon as I am aware of the grace flowing in and out.  Then I am in my natural shul.

paul mandala 2015 - detail

I was picturing Issy there, in his usual seat, with his white shawl wrapped around him, and his sparkling joyous gravity.  I feel he was an architect in the medieval flowering of sacred geometry and alchemical science, when Jewish and Islamic sages worked together. When – like him – we are called back into the Scroll, we are all the names that were ever given us on earth – and so we have no particular one, we are nameless!

When I ask where and what is God, and love of God, God happens when a tabernacle opens.  When Yeshua stood with his friends on the mountain, their tabernacles opened to each other, and they KNEW.  The place of rest is the crystal receiving-set through which the Greater Mystery pulses.  In the silence the sages come to life:  the holy mountain.

Arcanum 7 The Chariot

1 magus - Version 3

In the Tarot, Key Seven awakens this knowledge and response.  It fields and fences the Magician’s ‘house’ or BEIT with CHETH the enclosure.  It takes a while to tap the portal;  but this morning again it stood open – it flows through here.

The Seventh Arcanum rests within the sense of expansion.  It is a seven pointed star.  The Seventh Arcanum reminds me now that each Tarot Key is a holy transmission, a contemplative and living silence.  The enigmatic image releases a quantum of shabat shalom baruch:  a commitment.  The prayer does not repeat;  it is new born.

For Issy:  Go Well!

In the House of God, the Cross represents the IAM (AHAM in sanskrit, AHIEH in hebrew) or AIM of Solomon’s temple. It was laid sky to ground-plan for the Common Era; in the cruciform shape of nave and transepts.

The horizontal beam of the Cross is warp and weft of the great picture of the universe. On this loom is strung the imaging or spectrum of the five senses: our body and terrain of perception.

The vertical beam, soaring limitlessly Above as Below, and effulgent through the sensory fabric, is the essence of our Self. Its spectrum, like Siva’s fiery column, transcends the narrow horizontal band of the senses and their story of space and time.  We see higher and lower octaves of the same instrument. (Link to “Cathedral Building“)

Essentially, the horizontal beam manifests time and space. The vertical beam intersects this tapestry at any given point of life, as cognition or awareness, before and after birth and death, and in the depth of dreamless sleep. It is anterior to the ‘evidence’ it illumines. It brings into play our hidden dimension.

netzach hod temperance sketch_0001

The heart of the Cross is a fluid point of stillness wherein the two planes meet. They create upon each other a factor of vital resistance: the birth of an evolutionary consciousness. The vertical beam is masculine, the Creative potential; and the horizontal is feminine, the balancing inertia or momentum: (or rajas, tamas, whose “balance” is sattva.) In the ground-plan of the Cathedral, the vertical is laid along the meridian west to east, Earth’s rotation to sunrise.** The horizontal crosses it, south and north, as do the Pillars of Solomon, to uphold the cosmic temple.

**Sunrise, itself motionless to the rotating surface of Earth, is “outside time”. Sunrise encircles our local measure and engirdles Earth. To the Temple plan, sunrise is the metaphysical centre of gravity, or “sky” unchanging

So we have first the creative principle, the idea upon the ground, a map or sacred diagram laid out along our axis of sunrise. From this arises the actual fabric, like a plant: the Tree of Life’s integrity on the columns of Jakin and Bohaz. The equilibrating of active and passive “poles” of construction, manifests this principle. A draft sketch is translated into an arch, a portal of height, breadth and depth. It manifests for us in three dimensions.

ogive chartres vault

Paradoxically, the visible, audible and tangible, is a worldly cross-section through the numinously unseen. The grace and proportion of the building, altering the consciousness that enters it, is an echo only of the Light which was its inspiration. It is the ripple or projection upon the sensory field, of all time, all space, and simultaneously it is neither.

Nowadays, a hologram is created by projecting laser beams to cross each other at right angles. An image is created in space when the mutual-interference pattern of their rays precisely fits. Upon this principle the perceptible universe is strung, and sustained. The same image-ing of three dimensions, from the galactic to the miniature, will manifest an apparently solid picture of reality, wherever you cut through the projection. You pass your hand through empty air, and yet the picture remains, like a standwave.

The same applies to apparently impregnable infrastructures of our mind, emotions, karmic dragons, and sorrows of life. What are these really? Who holds the lamp which illumines the inner space, like clear sky?

The Cathedral is a projection onto the physical plane, of a “hologrammatic” revelation, achieved by cross-fertilising or marrying that plane with its numinous perpendicular, in sacred geometry.

..

In twelfth century gothic art – (Fulcanelli’s argot or art-gothique, the slang of the Philosophers’ Stone) – the Knights of the Temple did not depict the Crucifixion. Their true Cross is in the natural ground-plan of heaven to Earth, as drawn with a circle round it by stake and string. This circumscribed cross is also an ancient form of the Hebrew letter TAV, which signifies completion.

The Christ, an ancient, immanent, unfathomable mystery uplifted in stone and earth, is in the Templars’ sanctuaries Un-crucified. The body of nave and transepts lies upon Earth to receive Heaven. This follows the law of mandala and yantra construction, which diagram the laws of tree growth. The holy Spirit so earthed, engages with the commodity of the world. And the gothic Temples to Notre Dame in northern France represent each a star in the Virgin constellation, as laid out over the land.

The real meaning of “the Virgin” is “she who is ripe”.

child madonna sketch 1957

At the time of harvest she is the fruitful womb, receptacle for implantation, one that is in readiness. The Spirit is seeded deep into matter, into the cave or oracle of Earth – the grain, the bread of life. In an earlier age, Our Lady was Isis of Egypt who reunited the fragments of the body of Osiris into his wholeness or Divinity. She has her counterpart in Hindu cosmology as Parvati, Mother of the universe, Daughter of the Mountain, shakti power of manifestation and abundance. In Greece she was known as Demeter and as Ceres, from whom the grain sprouts.

Her Knights, being Hospitallers or Guardians of the Sanctuary (routes of pilgrimage) enlisted in the early part of the twelfth century Common Era, the support of the Church, whom they funded. They made an offer which could not be refused, to build Houses of God. Their spiritual sponsor was the great Benedictine Bernard of Clairvaux.

..

But these Knights were not mere Crusaders. They were messengers of Great Mikael, archangelic slayer of Dragons clerical as well as secular: who, looking deep into the dark dense coil of Baphomet, liberates and raises up the Light – as consciousness. A hundred years or so later, the Church, frightened of their rival power, accused them of devil worship and burnt them at the stake.

Here, time as a Great Circle clashed with linear or ‘tick tock’ time. By then the Knights had seeded a number of soaring Temples of Light into the soil of Mother Earth in northern France; and more were undoubtedly planned to fill and peg down the entire constellation; the vessel for the Divine Child.  The Black Death followed their demise as an Order, fragmenting time, space and continuity. The Black Death flowed around the gothic sanctuaries which transcended it.

“Gothic” is a strange word, as handed down to us, for it has acquired paradoxical resonances of horror, caricature and over-elaboration – I believe this is due to the plague’s shocking spectre in our deep cellular and racial memory.

..

imponderables rose cross

The Order reappeared several generations later as a Rosy Cross fraternity, and from about the seventeenth century onward, was reorganised into the Degrees of freemasonry.

From the fertile soil or compost of the Black Death, had sprouted a strange Renaissance flower – Botticelli’s Aphrodite – and the later cultivation of a deductive science to investigate and ravish her.

..

small aphrodite

Hokhmah and Nezach on the Tree
I find a resonance or echo here with the birth of Aphrodite in greek mythology, from the castration of Uranus the god of Revelation. In those legendary dreams, Uranus, the Sky of Stars, lay with Gaea, Earth. Gaea grew tired of the incessant titans Uranus begot on her, and called on their young son Chronos – meaning cycles of Time and therefore limitation – to do the job. The procreative organ of Uranus fell into the sea. It stirred up a titanic froth on the wave, from which emerged the comely figure of Aphrodite, goddess of Desire, pulse of nature’s beauty, and of attraction.

In the geographical solar system, the polar tilt of both Venus and Uranus inclines at a virtual right-angle to that of the other planetary bodies. Mercury, Terra, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto all rotate more or less, west/east. The rotational spin of Venus and Uranus is north/south, almost into the plane of their orbits.

That innocence, inner science, or in-formed awareness of their association is shown in the ancient myths, whose Masters possessed no measure more than their ear to the ground.

From “Mysteries of Chartres Cathedral” by Louis Charpentier:
“The currents in old Earth are numerous and various, but here at Chartres we are concerned with one that is especially sacred, capable of awakening a man to the spiritual life. The DIVINE is born here, and no material influence may be allowed to trouble or destroy it. The Hill of Chartres must not be polluted. That is why, among all the french Cathedrals, Chartres is the only one in which no king, cardinal or bishop is interred. The Hill must remain virgin.”

This paragraph declares the Resurrection of the Christ. Here there is no merely dead seed.  The telluric pulse at Chartres is particularly potent. Here under the Mound in ages past, was enthroned a Black Virgin, Our-Lady-under-the-Earth, as a focus for pilgrimage and inner purification. She is our subconscious, so she is the ageless Isis, Demeter, Belisima.

Scorpio & Virgo glyphs: phallus and womb

Scorpio & Virgo glyphs: phallus and womb

The currents in old earth – like the mesh of chorionic villi, those tiny vessels and fibres of lifeblood which embed the embryo in the lining of the maternal womb – are the same subtle meridians of the Dragon or Serpent energy which flow along the leylines. In the landscape, as in our body, these are gathered and released or contained at acupunctural power-points – (see in Charpentier’s work, and below, the map of Virgo Our Lady of the Constellation in France) – to invoke Archangel Mikael’s protection, and for gestation.

Virgo constellation:Chartres 4

These ageless foci of authority or power, are condensers. They are dolmens or druidic circles of stones. They became towers, temples and churches to Michael and Maria, the Guardian and the Mother of God. The Michael and Mary leyline in England runs from the eastern part of the country through Ogbourne St George in Wiltshire through Avebury and Stonehenge, Glastonbury and a succession of tumps, mounds and chapels across Sedgemoor, Devon and Cornwall to St Michael’s Mount in the bay of Penzance. A friend I visited in Ogbourne, where George slew the dragon of Albion, has a well inside her house sunk deep into this Line. Her guests have interesting dreams at night.

To “slay” or pierce the Dragon, harnesses its creative strength. It can be tamed and trained to become a strong and willing servant or alliance to the higher power. This corresponds to the Karmic “leyline” of tendency (ascending and descending Lunar nodes, known as the Head and Tail of the dragon) in our astrological maps. Where the Moon’s orbit around the Earth crosses the path of Earth’s orbit around the Sun, these are the Lunar nodes.

The Knight is the seer., The Dragon is his personal attachment to the mortal coil to master. The Dragon, as electric current in the copper wire, is coiled around a MAGNET, the treasure of the Source, our inner elixir.

On Tuesday morning at just after 6am London time, the Sun was eclipsed by the new Moon.  And so the pressure of this rare event – the Easter Grand Cross between Moon and Sun eclipse – begins to ease and release its energy field.   Un-numbered moments of death and birth passed through, and changed their tune.

Poem of Eclipse:  Archangelus

Ketu Southnode

Persons who look directly
might be blinded.

Michael’s wisdom sword’s too sharp
for the surface world to bear:
to receive unseen a big black blasting beam of light.

Like a needle
it enters where the meridian discharges.
It may secretly rest.
It is known from beyond the system.

In here,
a littleness oft asleep
into a great snake willingly grows.

The call of the hidden night is the Knight, Self knowing archangel Michael,
slayer of lies.

I recognise and within it, stay.
As it becomes, it disappears;

and do not say the miracle
should happen overnight.
Let the oracle rest inside, to clear
at point of spear… given time.

The sword of Michael archangel is the
serpent seeing itself dispassionately.

In Jung’s Red Book …

“He went into the desert … he wanted to find what he needed in the outer. But you find manifold meaning only in yourself, not in things, since the manifoldness of meaning is not something that is given at the same time, but is a succession of meanings.  The meanings that follow one another do not lie in things, but lie in you, who are subject to many changes, insofar as you take part in life.  Things also change, but you do not notice this if you do not change.  But if you change, the countenance of the world alters!”

“But I saw solitude and its beauty, and I seized the life of the inanimate and the meaning of the meaningless.  I also understood this side of my manifoldness.  And thus my tree grew in the solitude and quiet, eating the earth with roots reaching far down and drinking the sun with branches reaching high up.  The solitary guest entered my soul.  But my greening life flooded me. jung as hermit

“Thus I wandered, following the nature of the water.  The solitude grew and extended around me.  I did not know how unlimited the solitude was, and I wandered and looked.  I wanted to fathom the depths of solitude, and I went so far until every last sound of life had died.”

“Balance is at once life and death.  For the completion of life, a balance with death is fitting.  If I accept death, then my tree greens, since dying increases life.  If I plunge into the death encompassing the world, then my buds break open.  How much our life needs death!  Joy at the smallest things comes to you only when you have accepted death.  But if you look out greedily for all that you could still live, then nothing is great enough for your pleasure …

“If you accept death, it is altogether like a frosty night and an anxious misgiving, but a frosty night in a vineyard full of sweet grapes.  You will soon take pleasure in your wealth.  Death ripens.  One needs death to be able to harvest the fruit …  Limitation enables you to fulfil your being.”

Grand Cross part 5 – Moon in Aquarius

23.4.14, Moon in 13 Aquarius - Tarot Keys 2 and 17: the Priestess and the Star

23.4.14, Moon in 13 Aquarius – Tarot Keys 2 and 17: the Priestess and the Star

These Tarot Keys, the Priestess and the Star show in picture language, the Moon in Aquarius, to which they are assigned.

Aquarius is the Water Bearer;  and those same waters flow from the lap of the Priestess.  Half hidden, she holds a scroll of the Akashic record;  the Grand Cross itself is on her breast!  On the pargod or veil behind her, is woven the Tree of Life:  her head is Da’at, union;  the cross is Tifareth.   The Sefiroth are pomegranates.  She is in bud.  She sits between Solomon’s pillars of Jakin (Yod) and Bohaz (Beit) – the day and the night.  She is the whole of the subconscious:  she is everything in us before it flowers and sprouts leaves and lives.  The Priestess serves the tides of the Moon.

Key 17 the Star is also called “Meditation”.  You can see why.  The Great Star shines through the seven stars or chakras of her spinal column:  the well has concentric ripples like the rings of a tree.  The scarlet ibis in the background is Thoth – intelligence of the Priestess’s ripe pomegranates.   The Priestess is heavily robed;  the woman of the Star is mother-naked.

Picture-language such as this, serves to open the mind;  to contemplate;  to begin to think creatively, as the surface of the pool is quietened.  We begin to see.

Explanations and interpretations are irrelevant.

We begin to see differently.  In psychological terms, it is the capacity of the Moon and of Yesod, to perceive;  to open the way.   This Wednesday, the Moon in 13 Aquarius resonates through Jupiter 13 Cancer, Pluto 13 Capricorn, Mars 13 Libra and Uranus 13 Aries, an unexpected reflection;  as if above and below all the news and views, the hidden spring is flowering.   But we must look within to find!

It is a providential yoga.  It is an alternative view;  the innner benediction.

On the Tree of Life, the Moon is Sefira Yesod – sphere of the personal self, our childhood conditioning, the filtering vessel through which we perceive the world.   The word yesod means “foundation”.   The transpersonal Self is expressed uniquely through each personal ego or small self: each way the “i” is tempered. This is where we grow, and open out into the branches of the Tree, and the heart of it which is Tifareth:  the beauty.

Menorah - showing Hebrew Sefiroth; and Tree of Life, showing the Sefiroth in English. Sefiroth means sphere or emanation.

Menorah – showing Hebrew Sefiroth; and Tree of Life, showing the Sefiroth in English. Sefiroth means sphere or emanation.

Many interpretations of today’s Grand Cross are locked into strutting sandwich-boards of doom.    So what’s new?  The symbols may be read as a closed-circuit or as a living spiral.  It is as old as the hills for the human monkey to look out there and project fear, drama and death onto what we view, and to give away to it, all our power.   During an eclipse period we are vulnerable to our negatives;  and it is Easter too.

What is the lesson now?  Seeing – and suffering –  a negative trend, keep the mysterious option open, wherein it swims.  Hold in consciousness both realities;  choose the limitless, and let the limitation within it, melt.  To access the power which knows the way, we need to look at life unfolding inside ourselves.  We tend not to.  It is more amusing, more horrifying and more dramatic to look at what the politicians and the corporations are doing.

Here is where it starts, and it takes strength to keep open, and to be in touch with ourselves where we really, really are.   The rest is hearsay, habit and a shrinking screen.

The Grand Cross mirrors human values and chivalry, as well as tension, challenge and change.

Ask:  am I a rigid frame, or do I dance?

“Move with the movement, keeping still, move with the beauty of the Tao in its flow of balancing, re-equilibrating. What seems dark to you is the water moving, and nature’s exquisite tendency to flow in and out of stress points. Sitting on the nub of what seems to be depression and insecurity, is a place from which to view the ebb and flow of life; without judgement, including the mood, without the mood. Tao is uncertainty. Don’t make it an enemy.

”Touch the muddy face with tenderness, and allow it to complete itself.”

These are thoughts inspired by Master Han, who wove his poems from the grasses and rocks of Cold Mountain in the 9th century AD:  here is a drawing of my own interface with him.  I had forgotten him!  Quietly he emerges from the dark corner of my soul.

April Grand Cross & Tarot Keys, Part 2

..

15 April 2014 - a chart of today's lunar eclipse on the forming Grand Cross. The moon and retro mars in Libra are a warlike feature, balanced by the grand trine venus-neptune in Pisces, with Jupiter and Saturn.

15 April 2014 – a sketch-chart of today’s lunar eclipse on the forming Grand Cross. The moon and retro mars in Libra, (opposite mercury-uranus in Aries), are a warlike feature, balanced by the grand trine venus-neptune in Pisces, with Jupiter and Saturn:  Venus exalted in Pisces in 10th house suggests a factor towards peace making.  This is a chart of opposite waves, and of unexpected change:  indeed a tipping-point.  The Eclipse period lasts until the 29th of this month.  The seed of eclipse is alignment in the planes of Sun, Moon, Earth.

**

Here is a precis of a recent Kabbalah meeting, in which we looked at a chart of today’s formation of the Grand Cross.

This morning, 15 April at 8.47 gmt, the Moon is eclipsed in Libra by the Sun in Aries. This might be a peak or tipping point.   We examine our impulses working for and against the situation. The crisis affects every one of us personally – to make up our mind: do we go forward? Or back?

Observe the shifting ground, the Karmic connections between involved nations, individuals and their planetary patterns.

Tonight – 15 April is Seder night – when the children of Israel left bondage and travelled into a new way of life. This applies to us all. In the gross media among nations, we can only hope the decision is peaceful. Pluto in Capricorn is Da’at – the space for long term processes – the knowledge of a civilization at the end of an époque: to evolve? Or to revert to savagery?   The present tension cannot go on.

Pluto in Capricorn. Pluto is assigned to Tarot Key 20, Judgment (ascension) and Capricorn is the sign ruling Key 15, the Devil. Behind the tension of opposites is their deliverance and release - the triad as with the child in Key 20.

Pluto in Capricorn. Pluto is assigned to Tarot Key 20, Judgment (ascension) and Capricorn is the sign ruling Tarot Key 15, the Devil. Behind the tension of opposites is their deliverance and release – the triadic release, as with the child in Key 20 – the family of humankind.

The Grand Cross works out in terms of our local interest and the bigger picture of the human community.   Are we selfish?   Or are we a human family? – our childrens’ children?

It is tentatively suggested that the World War One multiple-reactive patterns in Europe are now UNACCEPTABLE. This never before happened in history.  The economy cannot support them.  The situation is cosmic. In our sphere, the turn of the spiral crosses 1914 – the pattern was repeated since Roman-empire times.  Attempts to “secure” land go out of date, in the era of internet trading.   The guiding Hand pushes the situation as a challenge; the Tree of Humanity sways back and forth.  In 1962 (Cuban crisis) the planetary line-up was lop sided – with nearly all the planets in one sign, Aquarius –  and very dangerous.   The line-up this year is less so, because the celestial tensions are evenly balanced.

OBSERVE IN OURSELVES CLEARLY: local self interest versus the bigger picture in our conscience: watch the months following April.  Someone mentioned a recent TV programme on the beginning of cosmos, and the subtle electronics of our body – how illogical and unscientific it is to say “it just happened”!

Forces are at work at a very subtle level. Only from a Kabbalist-history standpoint can we get some idea of the bigger picture unclouded by surface hype and fears. A general feeling emerges here, that nothing spectacular occurs, but a great deal changes, which future perspective will reveal.   Countless geo-political and ecological factors are involved.  We shall see.

Uranus (The Fool or Pilgrim) in Aries (The Emperor, or Constitutional intelligence). This combination is a wake-up call, for Uranus is "change" and the Emperor's sign Aries is "seeing".

Uranus (The Fool or Pilgrim) in Aries (The Emperor, or Constitutional intelligence). This combination is a wake-up call, for Uranus signifies “change” and the Emperor’s sign Aries is “seeing” – and also, Aries is the first-born in the Zodiac.

Uranus on 13 Aries forms an exact right angle to Pluto on 13 Capricorn (see above, in this post).  Since summer 2012 and until spring 2015, we experience a series of seven tight “squares” between these two planets.  23 April will culminate the fifth in this series of seven.

Additional meanings are:  Capricorn, old age;  Aries, birth.

Pluto through Capricorn uproots old and outworn infrastructures – everything that was toxic emerges.  It is an agent of transformation and renewal.

The Tarot Keys are assigned to the signs and planets of the Zodiac, according to the Hebrew alphabet.  Letter Aleph (the Fool) is Uranus;  Letter Heh (the Emperor) is Aries the Ram. Uranus (radical change and revolution) in the Zodiac’s sign of birth, Aries, illustrates the obvious wake-up call.   A wealth of personal association may be discovered through contemplating these images.   For instance:  the relationship of dogs to sheep! – or “unarmoured” and “armoured”.   Please feel free to comment!

In the School of Cremona, the violin makers were a soul group. Modern American violin makers don’t know how to do it!   They unglued Stradivarius violins, took them apart, to find the secret – and they couldn’t.

Likewise, the esoteric view on history escapes linear historians.   The principle comes into focus in the NOW – our current understanding of psychology: our rights and wrongs in nature: and how Providence operates through the numerous Schools of the Soul when we sit and listen. It is a different climate from the past, indicating a new unfolding future. More persons are being trained than ever before. The Schools of the Soul are what Jesus meant when he said “you are salt of the earth”.

Ez Haim, the Tree of Life

Never underestimate the general telephone exchange and post office – Hod on the Tree of Life. How beautifully organised it is! We mess things up when we don’t notice them.

Though the Grand Cross configuration is massive, the decisions individuals make, matter; and for us personally, these decisions feel terrifyingly important to get right.   We are cells of Adam Qadmon.  Change and progress are inevitable.

Only individuals can change things and set the ball rolling – and not necessarily with great effort, it may come naturally.   It is about DOING YOUR JOB – or wanting to do it!   It is provided.

A friend was made a non-executive director of a company. He noticed how the business conducted itself in the boardroom much better in his listening and attentive presence, than it did when he was involved and trying to run it. A non-executive director in Life, learns all the time by listening – by being detached and seeing.   The art of life refrains from trying to tread the gear or push the action.

This is pure Da’at on the Tree – operating by inference, and not by leaning into the situation. Rather than try to fix someone’s problem… hear the voice, hear her speak, so she hears herself and melts her own resistance to solution.

Solution is relationship – an interior connection..   Da’at is Yesod of the higher world. A director in a company who watches and takes notes, gets everyone working – it irritates or galvanizes the workers a little!   The Da’at of any situation is its essence, lightly touched to life.

Further thoughts for today: The Order of the Grand Cross is the most advanced in many knighthoods.  I hadn’t realised this.  Why not regard the planetary Grand Cross in this light – a sign of nobility?  What is noble? – the aspiration towards the best in human nature:  values which endure and transfigure great difficulties.  Lean consistently towards the better in myself, to which I aspire, and towards what works for the bigger picture, as far as I can see.  Cultivate it here.  Keep remembering, keep picking myself up through raw and vulnerable moments, remember again, and draw strength from that quality.

It occured to me, that I can take certain qualities – such as courage, honesty, mindfulness, real love – and contemplate them.  For what we contemplate we become.

Then a friend rang up this morning and told me he had a dream.  A voice in it was saying, “Cry me a river”.  The human racket goes on, and there is a deep grief and pain of life.  Go into a secluded garden and make it beautiful, he said.  When the tension eases, as we go into May and June, we all shall do our summer planting, as  spring this year buds and flowers a month early – we had no winter frosts.

Sad it is for each of us, that the pain in humanity is our non-recognition – often until late in life – of our Soul Law triad (Hesed, Gevurah, Tifareth) and its response to the transpersonal Daat in the tree.  We are born again, we come into life without the integrating memory, and we have to find it all over again, like a blind person feeling along the walls of a room (between people) towards … the open door.

We recreate our wholeness again and again, through the sweat of our brow, the willingness of the heart, and the sturdiness of our limbs to turn the earth and make it fruitful.  We labour to give birth.  The awakened “quantum” of humanity is – as ever through history – of homeopathic potency in its dilution.  The ratio remains about steady.

The April Grand Cross in Tarot Keys

..

Grand Cardinal Cross 23 April 2014, 04.15gmt

Grand Cardinal Cross 23 April 2014, 04.15gmt in London UK

This event is building in our lives all spring, ever since its New Moon messenger back in January.  Here – as the first in a series of posts – are some of my thoughts about it.  My drawing of the Grand Cross is coloured in the spectrum of the Tarot Keys (applied to  Zodiac signs and Houses) as taught by the Builders of the Adytum.

..

Here is a reminder of the New Moon chart at the beginning of this year: and a link.

..

Glancing across to the Red book this morning, I caught sight of the “little black beetle on a rock pushing its mythical ball of sand”, and Jung (on his journey in the desert) wondering if it creates its conscious Scarab myth: and a thought comes up, that when we are living the myth – the Great Myths & Archetypes, as well as our small local ones – we are perhaps unconscious! (We dream.)

scarab and granite

scarab and granite

Those titans who seeded their endeavours into the human collective imagination, endured (in their sight) perhaps ordinary and laborious lives, unawake to the resonance.   Perhaps the weight of the unfolding myth puts us to sleep, so future millennia will sing.

What is your myth?

I have been turned rather towards one room, lately and am loaded with Jupiter.   Time to step back a bit, and take a look through other doors. Yesterday, a lady from Cypress showed me a print-out from the internet, concerning the Christ-conscious viewpoint of the Grand Cross – the Child being born; the symbol, like a star, implying 4 and 8, and so on.   It was enough to remind me that the Grand Cross on which much human tension is projected, is an actual alignment of the Great Maestri or Hierarchy; it is full of “yogas” or points of resonance.   The Moon at 13 Aquarius in 12th, “sings” the Cross’s tone, each arm on the 13th degree of its sign.

Here briefly, is a list of Kabbalistic meanings for the number 13 gematria.  In this system, the Hebrew letters which spell a word, have numerical values.   The Hebrew consonants in each of these words add up to 13, and so each word (through spectrum of opposites), carries the same meaning as the others:

Gematria ahbh achd 13

The meanings are: “BNH, Binah (Understanding)”.  “AHBH, Love”. “AChD, Unity”. “AYB, Violation”. “BAHU, Void (desolation)”. “DAGH, Anxiety/cave/grief”.  “GHH, Healing/health”.  And GY, “Valley” …

… a depth of feeling and resonance.  Other echoes are the Sun and 12 Zodiac signs;  the Anointed One and 12 disciples, and so on.  A circle has 12 divisions and its centre, the One. “13” is union.

..

In 2011, I laid out the T-Square of Pluto in Capricorn, Uranus in Aries and Saturn in Libra with the Tarot Keys (see at the end of my next post.)   This was pictorially effective, giving a different angle for interpretation.  So this morning I laid the Grand Cross out on the floor here, the same way.

The long arm includes its Yesod foundation – Moon in Aquarius, Keys 2-17. The Ascendent (Malkuth) is Neptune in Pisces; the Hanging Man in the path of the Moon.   That goes in the centre, where the horizontal and vertical arms intersect.   Look at that! – what powerful incentives for evolution and reversal of old patterns.

We will look at each pictorial pair, in my next posts.

Whatever makes or breaks in the surface dream, here are the long term dynamics, here is the river as it flows, the Wake up call … to contemplate.

The April Grand Cross laid out in the Tarot Keys. The Wheel is Jupiter, in the Chariot, Cancer. The Judgement is Pluto, in The Devil, Capricorn. The Tower is Mars, in Justice, Libra. The Fool is Uranus, in The Emperor, Aries.

In this series of posts, I shall discuss the planet/tarot relationships in more detail. For the moment, here is the situation in picture language – (for our subconscious storehouse responds to images, rather than to words) – and here are a few general observations, below.

The Sabian-symbol degrees of the April Grand Cross are not very auspicious.  (You can look them up online). This suggests to me the cosmic capacity within us, and in the Guardians who form the Cross, and in many key personages in world events, to catalyze or bring the light right into dark situations, and to be unexpected agents for transformation. Our view of anything at present, is incomplete.

It is make or break:  a time of decision in a myriad facets of the same gem.  Are we to continue selfishly – (unacceptable) – or with conscious community?   regarding our eco-system and human family?   Isolation or connectivity?   It starts at home.

..

It so happens that the Grand Cross forms a major transit with my birthchart.  Here – for my own archive – is a brief run-through of my connecting points with it:

Pluto in 13 Capricorn, on my Jupiter.

Jupiter in 13 Cancer, opposite my Jupiter, and T-square my Neptune.

Mars retro in Libra, conjunct my Neptune (15), which it will cross on 17 April, and then again, (after the alignment), on 16 – 25 June.   Today Mars is at 17 Libra.   It will turn on 19 May at 9 Libra, to travel direct.  So look towards June for the full “effect”.

Uranus in 13 Aries, opposite my Neptune in Libra – a transpersonal contact/collective.

The Sun in 2 Taurus, conjunct my North node (touching Seal of Solomon aspect pattern).  It is in the April eclipse-alignment channel.

Saturn in 21 Scorpio, conjunct to my Midheaven/midnight axis.

Last but not least, is Neptune on the Ascendent, 7 Pisces, opposite my natal Saturn on my Ascendent.

..

..

A further thought: events such as this in the sky around us, are older than the hills.   They are always happening, and passing through one another.   There is a Star when Jesus is born, which only a few wise elders recognise. There is a Harmonic Concordance – a Star of David – at eclipse in November 2003.   There is the lunar Grand Cross in summer 2012, and the bigger Jupiter Grand Cross this month.

There are countless similar events and births.   Each time, we look, we react and point to it as our ancestors did, and load it with racial and individual conscience, and try to figure out the meanings. Each time such a star forms, there is a tension of what is to be born.  We are the system of our Sun, our Solomon.  We embody microcosmically, the serene stresses of the planets’ orbital dance and nodal points of meeting.   Always it is changing:  arise, settle, change and vanish ;  arise, settle, change, vanish …

Mercury April allegory, after Botticelli (2007). Note the right angle Mercury makes to the nymph, in his self-enquiring stance, like a tree. He is the messenger of the planets; their swift voice - and in the Grand Cross, Mercury is in Aries between the Sun and the south Node.

He is the messenger of the planets; their speech and bearer of tidings. In the Grand Cross, Mercury is in Aries between the Sun and the lunar-eclipse south Node, and almost overwhelmed. Keep quiet!

The Great Star patterns – such as this Grand Cross of Jupiter, Pluto, Uranus, Mars in Cardinal signs – were in place when the solar system’s present aeon through time and space began, and to the majority they pass un-noticed.   Through global networking, there is some stirring among the sleepers.   Here and there, Psyche beholds her Cupid.

But to apprehend
the point of intersection of the timeless with time,
is an occupation for the saint –
no occupation either, but something given and taken,
in a lifetime’s death in love,
ardour and selflessness and self surrender.
For most of us, there is only the unattended moment, the moment in and out of time …”

A Grand Cross – symbol also of our Earth – centres a fluid intersection – vertical over the horizontal – of the planes: the awakened and the sleeper.

Where is Mercury on the Grand Cross in chart?  He is conjunct the Dragon’s Tail of eclipse, and almost hidden by the Sun.   In London the Sun is still asleep, it is (in 1st or 2nd House, depending on the house-system used) the hour of Dawn, the hour of the Sun’s greatest power and potency below the horizon.

A week earlier, on the 15th, the Sun eclipses the Moon.   A week later, on the 29th, Moon’s shadow will pass over the Sun. We wake when we sleep. The Archangel draws upon our door, a phoenix feather.

Millions of children in our world, young and old, are trapped in the agony of civil war, starvation, displacement and abuse.  Rain forests are destroyed, fuels are sucked from Earth, we destroy what we devour, we uphold petty arguments of empire, and those in government steal from the petty cash.  How can this go on?

Yet I feel the day will be a peaceful one.   We will be dreaming, and later events will reveal what dreams we let forth into the light.   We will in fact be delivering birth.   This is a time to be silent and hear.   It goes deeper than our emergency with ecology, climate change and international tension, for we have to get to the root – to touch the root of it within ourselves, as we are not separate.   How this feels, and how it informs you is for you to discover; for though we are not separate, our “I” is infinitely distinct and diverse in nature.

A Grand Cross of this kind, gives you a whole season, and the unfolding years, to feel it in your bones, and to grow. If you are able, be mostly at home during its peak period (15th – 29th April), and especially on the 23rd; and do practical house things to earth the currency, or to help someone who needs you.    If you are travelling, keep journeying into your private oasis, whenever you remember it is “here”.

The word “private” is highlighted here; for the Moon persona on 23 April at 4.15am in London will be in the 12th house, where she isn’t strong in the ways of the world.   The Pisces Ascendent has an introverted “psychic” character – in the higher humanitarian octave.

Respecting this trend, do not go forth too much during the peak period; do not force any issue.   Whatever agitates your fishes in the sea, is in the hand of a Power which knows the Way.   Decisions will appear, in your field, after the new-moon eclipse on the 29th – when the new cycle begins.   This will be a wonderful time to start planting in your garden.

Eclipse is a darkness, such as fell over Bethlehem the House of Bread, when the secret Child was born. The seed is like yeast or sperm. The seed falls into the ground and sprouts.   This is the meaning of Key 13.

The seed falls into the ground during autumnal Scorpio, and germinates during the winter;   this spring, we are given the whole process again in a nutshell.   If the germinating energies are very tiring, rest yourself, and don’t try to do too much.   You may feel an urgency to bring matters in your life to a head;   but this is being taken care of.   Your creative activity will gain surprising strength as the flowers come out in May, and as those forces which stir within the ground, come out onto the physical plane.   Watch this space!

..

Eclipse is a simple withdrawal of energy.   The tide goes out.   The tide comes back in again.

For more on eclipse, see my post “The Field of the Dead”.

J. Krishnamurti (who experienced and monitored his conflict in a moment-to-moment way) stated that the essence of conflict is peace.   The polarities – the high tide and the low tide – are not in conflict with each other.   He said essentially, there is no conflict in the movement, the unbroken circling of the tide itself. There is no conflict in our breathing in and out:   the Tao.   The NOW.

Sacred India Tarot Arrows – Transition

..

Sacred India Tarot - Pages of Arrows - Version 2

In some ways, my process with the Arrows, in my inner and outer life, is the deepest yet. The Arrows are of “confrontation” and its passage into peace.

Sacred India Tarot 10 of Arrows - Version 2

Touching on the 10 of swords is nadir – I feel that resonance the collapse of the seed and civilization, for the new growth and transmission.   King Bheeshma dies – he gives his Arrow of knowledge and wisdom to the young Yudishtara.  Rock bottom: from the old as it dies, is planted the new.   It is in the martial art movement, an empty leg with the fullness of the ground flowing into it.   In my painting of 10 of Swords, the old King dying on the Arrows along his spinal chakras, uplifts his nobility into the compassion of the new King’s listening face.

In the Sacred India Tarot facebook page yesterday, Rohit mentioned:
In traditional Tarot this is rock bottom, but in yoga that is also understood as the beginning of a new cycle.
Bheeshma failed, but the knowledge and wisdom he accumulated was passed on so that Yudhistara could succeed. Hence the personal failure did not count as much as the societal gain in the end…”

..

The Fool in the Tarot, is known in our Sacred India Tarot deck as “the wild card”.  This is because the archetype comes through the primordial Wild Hunter, the divine Rudra, fore-runner of Siva.

Every innocent Fool – or Wild Hunter –  embarks upon an adventure!   Each soul who embarks upon an adventure is a Fool!   The Fool is the entire Tarot – the space between the lines.   Pretty soon, the Fool meets the Magician and the (subconscious feminine) Priestess, who contains him, and reveals in succession, Empress, Emperor, and Hierophant;  his sense of proportion returns.

This was the unpublished version of Rudra - the Fool or creative principle of the deck

This was the unpublished version of Rudra – the Fool or overall creative principle of the deck

The Fool begins the journey in an exciting mist.   As the sun rises and gains strength, the landscape and its mountain peaks and chief features, appear.   Human are we, everlastingly.

But I want to reflect on the 10 of Swords as I am passing through.   The nadir (at any point) is reached when a situation overwhelms me.  I lose my vital force and die.   Dying, I wait latent for the daffodils to appear.

Psychologically, the 10 of Swords carries remorse and new intention.   We all get it repeatedly in our lives.  This Key is hard, but it is a good one.   When we are overwhelmed, we are obscured and off balance.  But the “overwhelming factor” is self-correcting in the Tao.  When Yang is saturated, when it is filled, it converts to Yin, and vice versa.  This movement ever oscillates and stretches, concludes and opens.   I am the pebble which is rolled in the river bed.

Truth is the blank, the empty room’s passing;  be still and honour it, this morning.

So:  the feeling this morning.  Stasis, empty room, and sorrow.  Not about anything particular.  Sorrow is an essential part of the mix;  like rain in the sky.   Sorrow is awareness, and this feels good and right.  It breathes its own pulse.   It is love which is object-free;   it is the soft talk of the stream that flows on the mountain.   I give my sorrow time and space.  It cleanses, after each “overwhelming” or flood of the Fishes in Tao.   It makes slow Ch’i movements with a candle flame.   Nurture the rich field of sorrow, the empty fullness – the Fool in sacred space.  Alone in the oscillation, is life.  The Swords which move it, are the discipline of the Work:  the dance form.   This is what I love.

..

Sorrow is a form of the Sword.   I found, to illustrate the “Han” part of my previous post, this photo online of two Tao gentlemen on a sea-beach:  one of them just tossed the other lightly upside down, and he cartwheels – they wear flowing white jackets and black flapping trousers, they make a Tao symbol.  They are not doing the Sword form, but the Sword form is based on the flow around Tan t’ien in the belly.

What is Sword Form?   What is the Tao chi?   What is citta (sanskrit)?  It is total concentration on Life – just as a woman in utmost labour is concentrated.   It is a difficult art to get it right;  but keep practicing with this Sword – and “no blame” as those Oriental gentlemen would say (whenever it obsesses a bit).

Centrifugal Yang through Yin - sketched from "The Trigrams of Han" by Steve Moore

Centrifugal Yang through Yin – the “destruction cycle’ sketched from “The Trigrams of Han” by Steve Moore.  Fire melts metal which cuts wood which uses earth which drinks water … which puts out fire.

..

In Kabbalah practice are very high ideals when the “concentration” surges.   Pleasure-seeking Yesod child in due course pulls it down to the consumer level, where it breaks up – and clings to the bits of wet bread, and weeps with being abandoned, and the job yet again, to get out of the fix.

But the beautiful balance – being Empty for the Full – always returns.   Each time there is a little more learning.   There is wood to cut and water to gather, as before.

And returning to the space:  as De Ruiter would say – let it be tenderly obvious and obscure.  The values of life are in the illumined empty-full:  the attendance on the tendency … the fluid point between those gentlemen on the beach:  between the waves.  We are all of a waveband.

Rohit and I are students of Jung.  To some extent, Jung seems to have directed our project, The Sacred India Tarot, which bridges the spiritual traditions and their archetypes, for he crops up in my journal over the years, whenever it became intense.

At about this point in our Archive, the Suit of Arrows changes its tone.  The battle is complete, with the Ten of Arrows;  a new realm opens, as the instinct to make war transforms to “martial art”.  Intuitively, the Swords/Arrows change to Rods or Wands – the coming Suit of Staves.  The Wand or Stave is actually the Caduceus, serpent twined – the authority by which Moses struck water from the rock.

In the seminal Red Book, Jung’s journey with Elijah and Salome continues:

jung as hermit

jung as hermit

Footnote: “Now I learn that Mary is the mother, the innocent and love-receiving, and not pleasure who bears the seed of evil in her heated and seductive manner.  If Salome’s evil pleasure is my sister, then I must be a thinking saint, and my intellect has met with a sad fate. …  Salome as Elijah’s daughter, is an offspring of thought, and not the principle itself, which Mary the innocent virgin mother, now appears as.”

And:  “The image of the cool starry night and of the vast sky opens up my eye to the infinity of the inner world, which I as a desirous man feel is still too cold.  I cannot pull the stars down to myself, but only watch them.  Therefore my imperious desire feels that world is nightly and cold.”

He refers to abstract perception, and to the refining of his desire.  For most of us, the refinement does not nourish us, until we are willing to wait upon it in our empty-full.   Then it becomes a nectar waterfall.  It is the fulfilment of humanity’s higher Self – everything else is starvation, really.   Our origin is this element.

Jung's painting of himself with Elijah and Salome in the Red Book

Jung’s painting of himself with Elijah and Salome in the Red Book

The chapter in the Red Book titled “Resolution” witnesses a struggle between doubt and desire:  the prophet bids him desist from climbing the high ridge of a rock which separates day and night.   To the right of the rock is a black serpent, to the left, a white one.   (Goodness, those Oriental gentlemen again !)  They pounce and wrestle terribly.

caduceus

“The black serpent seems to be stronger, the white serpent draws back.  Great billows of dust rise from the place of struggle.  But then I see: the black serpent pulls itself back again.  The front part of its body has become white.  Both serpents curl about themselves, the one in light, the other in darkness.”

He thinks it over, and asks Elijah – “Should it mean that the power of the good light will become so great that even the darkness that resists it will be illumined by it?”  For answer, Elijah takes him to the high place and stands upon the altar Stone:  “This is the temple of the sun.  This place is a vessel that collects the light of the sun.”

Then the prophet climbs down, becoming smaller and smaller until he is Mime the dwarf in the Ring Cycle.  Mime shows Jung the wellsprings of the deep.  “The collected light becomes water and flows in many springs from the summit into the valleys of the earth.” He dives into a dark crevice, and Jung follows him, hearing the rippling of a spring.  “Here,” says Mime “ are my wells, whoever drinks from them becomes wise.”

But Jung is scared, and he goes outside his house and walks up and down in his yard, in the full bright air of his interior vision, the cave.   Before the vision of the snakes, he had a block, and couldn’t descend:  his normal procedure would not descend.   He realised he had a conflict in himself about going down, and it took the imaginative form of two dark principles fighting each other, the serpents.

Caduceus on the tree of life. The lower figure was drawn with both hands simultaneously, exercising both sides of the brain – without leaving the paper.

In The Ring cycle, Mime the master craftsman, brought up Siegfried in the cave, to kill the dragon giant Fafner who stole the ring.  Siegried slays Fafner with Mime’s INVINCIBLE SWORD, gets the ring(?) and kills Mime who had intended to kill him.

It sounds like the transfer of the power in the 10 of Swords, in Mahabharath.  All mythologies bear the human tale.  It includes precognition and betrayals.  In Jung’s journey, the dwarf Mime represented the allure of the ‘clever’ intellect, untempered by the laws of love.

In the 10 of Swords, the old King’s “overwhelming” transforms to Consciousness, as the blades enter his awakened Kundalini spine:  the feeling is no longer pain.   It yields.   Knowledge happens when tension against it drops.  The snakes enter me.  I enter the snakes.  We flower, as the room is opened.

I now discover, the Royals – Page, Knight, Queen and King of Arrows – are all of a piece with these perceptions.

The Pages move together in alert reconciliation.  They are Archers, but the truce between them is a Sword.  This card recalls the 2 of Arrows, where the young Bheeshma in training to become a warrior, fights with his teacher.

Hanuman the monkey god, crossing the sea to jewelled Lanka to help Rama rescue Sita – (in the Suit of Wands/Staves) – carries a rosebud and displays great mental and intellectual energy.   He is of a par with the agile chessboard Knight’s lateral thinking, where everyone else travels in straight lines.  He is our wonderful servant;  but let him not become the dark dwarf Mime.  The dwarves in the underworld play the market with cunning, but do not release their treasure.

Queen Draupadi is a wild dark huntress, like Diana in the west – a formidable encounter for any unprepared male.  Note the snake around the sinuous tree.  The publishers of the deck requested she wear pantaloons, respecting the conventions in contemporary Indian art;  but here is the original drawing.

The King of Arrows is Garuda, who was half an eagle.  His human face is a double eagle, as in alchemy.  The eagle’s vision flies as high as the serpent travels deep.  Advised by the Lightning god, Indra, Garuda is a great ruler.   He balances Planet Earth lightly on a feather, raises his arrow like the Queen of Justice in the west, and contains his ojas.
Before him, the Caducean pair of serpents rest on the ground, entwined.

We will discuss these cards more fully in the next SITA posts.
