Sages by the holy hill – Ramana, Poonja and devotee

I am conditioned by a spiritual teaching: to keep quiet in personal matters – why? Because – the noise and pain is on the surface, and cannot transform anything inside its own scarring.   To keep quiet and open with a situation as it changes, is trans-formative.   Instinctively, intuitively, I know this, and its potential awakening.   But  I want to tell, and it is in me a stuck clamour, when the personified fragments which come out, are untrue to my truth.   Conscious with and as these painful personified fragments till they fade … — they fade and flutter like Siva’s grey ash turning white. .

Jung said in The Red Book, “Then turn to the dead, listen to their lament and accept them with love. Be not their blind spokesman.”  He adds this to the Christian law of love and redemption. .

“… Have reverence for what has become. … If you know what the dead demand, temptation will become the wellspring of your best work, indeed of the work of salvation. When Christ ascended after completing his work, he led those up with him who had died prematurely and incomplete under the law of hardship and alienation and raw violence. The lamentations of the dead filled the air at the time, and their misery became so loud that even the living were saddened, and became tired and sick of life and yearned to die to this world already in their living bodies. And thus you too lead the dead to their completion with your work of salvation.” .

Jung's mandala to the flowering dead

Jung’s mandala to the flowering dead.  They are the souls also of our previous lives and formation.  On the compass points, the two vertical gates contain “animus” – he describes them as an elder sage and a magical or cthonic one     The horizontal gates contain  “anima” – the dark and the light womb or Mother.

Recent unbearable impressions: a ten year old boy in Gaza going crazy because all his family are killed by another bomb from Israel.  Small girls in chains, being dragged to unknown husbands as cattle.  The great Tree Spirits of the rain forest being slaughtered, torn, and replaced by tidy rows of dark-green palm slaves.  Cattle jammed in desert corrals somewhere in America, like ants, with giant trucks driving through them with “feed” – concentration camp, this is what humans eat.  Fish being vacuumed out of the sea.  The human wound and greed spills poison into nature and the oceans.

It seems to me now, that humans in the retro trap of aggressive wealth, cannot change their nature.  But souls who are incarnating into the human race at present, can and do.   A time approaches, when the above scenes of inhumanity are inconceivable.  Something emerges through the dead end: the truth of living and dying; and living and dying.

In my mind, I am, you are, a human child – a culture, a civilization, with countless humans (thoughts) passing through, living and dying, many are of the same herd type, they bleat like distressed sheep.   In Plato’s cave are Shadows! The parade is endless. They are all mine, since the fire glowing behind me throws “mine” onto the cave wall, which attracts the collective dark parade from nowhere to no place.

The ascent to the sunlight is under the road-bridge. Along the road-bridge come the procession of shadows and lives which the firelight projects onto the cave wall in front of the bound souls.

I remain fascinated by the primal fire of life which projects these shadows – the fire is behind me, the Karmic furnace – yet there is an opening to my right, and the choice is to turn and venture up that passage into the open, into the direct, warm light of the Sun itself.

I know all the shadows are still there flickering with their fire in the cave, an essence of my identity, my root in the ground.

I know when I am outside, by looking back at the cave entrance, and seeing it in its place.   I cannot avoid the stress of my being, and I often get engulfed by it.

And relax, letting go the stress in living and dying …  let my solar plexus loosen, let breath be drawn unobstructed, all the way down into my root chakra, through the dantien.   It rounds itself, like an earthenware vessel which carries cool water from the well.   In the water are reflected and born again, the distant stars and Suns.

The Pool of Life

..

Liverpool Cathedral

Liverpool Cathedral

This post is a partner to yesterday’s Liverpool sketchbooks (for my archive) – Jung’s dream in 1927 of Liverpool.

His pioneering journey into the unconscious was extraordinary and illumined the way for generations to come.  As I and many others travel on his shoulders, the places he visited keep joining up with mine, and feel startlingly familiar.  I had similar dreams of a dark city, mountainous in scale,  with a glowing centre and even a pool or inlet from the sea.  It was  the city of the mind – a many towered labyrinth.   In one of these dreams I was a fish in the pool, and someone threw a line, hooked my nose and flipped me onto dry land.  Ouch!

Here are extracts from the chapter Confrontation with the Unconscious in Jung’s  “Memories, Dreams, Reflections”.  The chapter first describes the creation of the Red Book. Then:

“I began to understand that the goal of psychic development is the self.  There is no linear evolution;  there is only a circumambulation of the self.  Uniform development exists at most, only at the beginning;  later everything points towards the centre .  This insight gave me stability, and gradually my inner peace returned.  I knew that in finding the mandala as an expression of the self, I had attained what was for me the ultimate.  Perhaps someone else knows more, but not I.

..

Window on Eternity by C G Jung – Red Book

“In 1927 I obtained confirmation of my ideas about the centre and the self by way of a dream.  I represented its essence in a picture which I called ‘Window on Eternity’.  The picture is reproduced in ‘The Secret of the Golden Flower’.  A year later I painted a second mandala, with a golden castle in the centre.  When it was finished, I asked myself, ‘Why is this so Chinese?’

“… Shortly afterwards I received a letter from Richard Wilhelm enclosing the manuscript of a Taoist-alchemical treatise entitled ‘The Secret of the Golden Flower‘, with a request that I write a commentary on it.  I devoured the manuscript at once, for the text gave me an undreamed of confirmation of my ideas about the mandala and the circumambulation of the centre.  That was the first event which broke through my isolation.  I became aware of an affinity;  I could establish ties with someone and someone.

“In remembrance of this coincidence, this synchronicity, I wrote underneath the picture which had made so Chinese an impression on me:  ‘In 1928, when I was painting this picture showing the golden, well fortified castle, Richard Wilhelm in Frankfurt sent me the thousand year old Chinese text on the yellow castle, the germ of the immortal body.’

Rocky 86.JPG - detail, train in city

“This is the dream I mentioned earlier.  I found myself in a dirty, sooty city.  It was night, and winter, and dark, and raining.  I was in Liverpool.

With a number of Swiss – say, half a dozen – I walked through the dark streets.  I had the feeling that there we were coming from the harbour, and that the real city was actually up above, on the cliffs.  We climbed up there.

It reminded me of Basel, where the market is down below and then you go up through the Alley of the Dead, which leads to a plateau above, and so to the Petersplatze and Peterskirche.

“When we reached the plateau, we found a broad square dimly illumined by street lights, into which many streets converged.  The various quarters of the city were arranged radially around the square.  In the centre was a round pool, and in the middle of it a small island.

While everything round about was obscured by rain, fog, smoke and dimly lit darkness, the little island blazed with sunlight.  On it stood a single tree, a magnolia, in a shower of reddish blossoms.  It was as though the tree stood in the sunlight and was at the same time the source of light.

..

“My companions commented on the abominable weather, and obviously did not see the tree.  They spoke of another Swiss who was living in Liverpool, and expressed surprise that he should have settled here.  I was carried away by the beauty of the flowering tree and the sunlit island, and thought, ‘I know very well why he has settled here.’  Then I awoke.

Swan Hebrew letter Beit

Swan Hebrew letter Beit

“On one detail of the dream I must add a supplementary comment:  the individual quarters of the city were themselves arranged radially around a central point.  This point formed a small open square illuminated by a larger street lamp, and constituted a small replica of the island.  I knew that the ‘other Swiss’ lived in the vicinity of one of these secondary centres.

“This dream represented my situation at the time.  I can still see the greyish-yellow raincoats, glistening with the wetness of the rain.  Everything was extremely unpleasant, black and opaque – just as I felt then.  But I had had a vision of unearthly beauty, and that is why I was able to live at all.   Liverpool is the ‘pool of life’.  The ‘liver’ according to an old view, is the seat of life – that which ‘makes to live’.”

..

(The Liver of Life!   His Window of Eternity mandala shows – like a grid – the city districts as holograms.  Each is as the whole, with its illumining centre and radii:  our human connectivity, beyond the box of space and time:  macrocosm of the microcosm.  When we awake we discover our imagined isolation was a fantasy.)

..

“This dream brought with it a sense of finality.  I saw that here the goal had been revealed. One could not go beyond the centre.  The centre is the goal, and everything is directed towards that centre.  Through this dream I understood that the self is the principle and archetype of orientation and meaning.  Therein lies its healing function … Out of it emerged a first inkling of my personal myth.

“After this dream I gave up painting mandalas …”

..

The Liverpool dream looks to me like a four-dimensional snapshot of Jung’s whole working life.   The lamp which the Red Book kept alight during World War One, glowed very deep, hidden inside the dark, but it passed from soul to soul.

During the following decades, Jung worked with clients – high achievers – who were deeply depressed and searching for a reason to live at all.  European society, collectively shattered by the carnage in the trenches, and with Nazism on the rise, endured dense clouds of scepticism and banality – the mind’s dark glamour.

He discovered that if he encouraged his patients to paint what they felt and saw, something in them took charge of the process and led them to an unexpected interior contact.  As the healing awoke, it took charge of the patient who began to open doors.

Dr Jung found it had little to do with himself as therapist.  His job was to lead his patients to the underground stream, on which they floated paper boats.   Art therapy was born.   It is for ourselves, each one, to contact the unique inner mystery which unites us.

Jung himself had pioneered the way, through the Red Book;  he told very few people about it, (though he showed some of his paintings to those whom he trusted) – but it rekindled by morphic resonance, as in “Window of Eternity”.

In his book Modern Man in Search of a Soul, he describes the new discoveries with his clients.

A Tale from the Watershed: Birds Nest Epoche

..

From "A Way of Life" by Jim Ede

From “A Way of Life” by Jim Ede

Watershed Dreams No.88 – May 1975

A pair of swallows or starlings were in the room mating and looking instinctively for material with which to build a nest.  They seemed to clutch at straws.  I helped them by providing a little pile of grass which I put on the table.  In this way I neglected the people who were with me also in the room, but I was very concerned for the birds, that they should be able to perform their spring functions which they longed so much to do.  Even so, my ‘help’ went only a very little way.  The odds for their breeding and survival were against them, so I was their deceiver.

They built a nest with whatever they could find, quite desperately.

I showed this nest to the people I was with in the room.  “Look how round it is getting,” I said. “Look at the inter-weaving of all its strands, as if they were building out of doors in the branch of a tree.  How powerful the instinct is, even when it doesn’t have the right material.”

This short dream-story is of the series of Watershed Tales in this blog.  You can find others under Categories or Search.  It is about an old Karmically interwoven relationship which failed.

Yet it seems I was not the birds’ deceiver.  Many years later – that same nest is alive and well.  It transformed to a new relationship with life, alive with hope.   Like many young dreams, this one was full of opposite futures and double-entendre.

leprecaun, struggle & egg

My future advises my past.   I felt this, long ago.   She continues to – miraculous and immense.   Time is no time. Life is unlabelled.   Dipping into a study book on Phenomenological Research methods, I found Clark Moustakas’ “Epoche”.

This is interesting, and on cue.   It seems to be what I always aimed towards. “The world … has been cleared of ordinary thought and is present before us as a phenomenon to be gazed upon, to be known naively and freshly through a ‘purified’ consciousness.”

Each morning here, for instance, I trawl my ordinary thoughts of the day before, until the inner Eye lights up and reveals their transmutation: shining fishes.

The way of the Alchemist is so. I feel around me softly, the Tetrahedral triads and lines from Nesting Tetrahedrons and The Djinn, as blessing.   However, who am I?

The ultimate Epoche is Self enquiry.   Discussing Epoche, Moustakas (author) goes into (recognisably) Buddhist and Vedanta method without naming so.   He is an academic but (discreetly) on a genuine spiritual path.   Good to tumble on this merger.

Do I cling to Kabbalist Lineage and its identity?   Why?

I have existential value and truth with Lineage. It is Saturn tempering Mars. It is an ancient skeleton holding a vital heartbeat.   It names and connects the wings of life, and shows me  to ride my bike safely and to live beyond constraint.   It is a Nest woven of all the Traditional twigs in love-knots, placed by the beak of the alighting bird, each a lifetime. But inside it are the unknown cosmic eggs.   The Nest allows the Egg to form and warm.

The paradox is – knowledge of the Traditions with my Un-named Epoche.   The Traditions and This.   The Mother and the quantum chick.   The egg shape solar system: above, below.

..

The birds tried to build a nest in an unsuitable place: their doomed love and urgency.  The nesting image is strong today, with the Quark eggs in it – a revolution of all traditions and their hens.   The Light of the World, tender and subtle, throws off dark garments.

Jung at about the time he met Idzubar

The Red book
“Man stands between emptiness and fullness. If his strength combines with fullness, it becomes fully formative. There is always something good about such formation. If his strength combines with emptiness, it has a dissolving and destructive effect, since emptiness can never be formed, but only strives to satisfy itself at the cost of fullness. Combined thus, human force turns emptiness into evil.

“If your force shapes fullness, it does so because of its association with fullness. But to ensure that your formation continues to exist, it must remain tied to your strength. Through constant shaping you gradually lose your force, since ultimately all force is associated with the shapeliness that has been given form. Ultimately where you mistakenly imagine that you are rich, you have actually become poor, and you stand amidst your forms like a beggar.

“That is when the blinded man is seized by an increasing desire to give shape to things, since he believes that manifold increased formation will satisfy his desire.   Because he has spent his force, he becomes desirous: he begins to compel others into his service, and takes their force to pursue his own designs.”

C.G.Jung

..

There!   Isn’t that what happens with spiritual charisma and inflation?   Materialism … the culture of consumers?

But what is strength? Strength is before formation.

Paths of awakening, and the pillars

Paths of awakening, and the pillars

Jung’s statement above is Kabbalist: Solomon’s pillar of force before formation, in the Tao of Tifareth – soul triad – strength.   This is a kind of labelling, but no more so than musical notes which strike resonances or the song of birds.   It doesn’t pin down the Bird.

Ahhh the phoenix.   So vast an archetype!

The culture of consumers threatens the eco system and cliff-hangs the human race.   Even so, I have this deep feeling that it is ephemeral, it is tinsel vulgar, our consciousness suffers to saturation, the juggernaut imbalance.   In years, decades to come, the acute emergency leaves the general landscape but little changed; Gaia prevails.   There are perhaps rougher weather conditions and leaner economies.   Do I remain in the human trough, or do I see over its rim, into the field?

Jacobs ladder - four dovetailed worlds

Jacobs ladder – four dovetailed worlds

The human tapestry is itself, inescapable.   I share a wide angle Kabbalist view, across centuries.   Only the bottom end of Jacobs ladder is generally visible where it rests on Assiyah – the product of the 4 Worlds: the temporary friction and weight of those stepping onto it; their civil wars and disputes and abuse and poverty and grabbings and luxury basements.

But, I once dreamed – (in early Tarot days, about the Emperor) – I saw snow-waters pouring down the sheer mountain face, the great peal of the waters, and humans climbing up it, up and up, fading into the mist … always.

The dimensions veil each other.

So now. How to live and think and be, as Epoche?

I sat and looked in the dark well water. Phone rang at once – my mother. She is almost 90 – a Leo-Aries. I saw her garden, the flowers at Kilve in Somerset, her sore legs, Edinburgh and everywhere she is, and has been – long natter.

With the Sea Monster

..

Painting by Jung: the Sun-boat, or Fabulous Odyssey

Painting by Jung: the Sun-boat, or Fabulous Odyssey

Here is my favourite painting so far, in The Red Book.

The Incantation is:

“One word that was never spoken.
One light that was never lit up.
An unparalleled confusion.
And a road without end.”

..

The sea monster with its tremendous eye and fearsome teeth, is quintessential to the enlightenment.

This morning I am depressed.  Politics is rubbish and always makes people unhappy or scooped. Idiot photo-shots. Who makes molehills out of them? Life – and the bigger picture – must go on.

The substance is YEKHIDAH the subsistent and limitless light.   Oh! Where is it today?   And where is the body of light?   Good question!   Get to work.

As I cannot find it by building it, practice remembering that it is in everything. It is in the relaxing of the inner self.   And it is awake on some days, and not on others. I cannot grab the Great Work like my bottle. I am outside the book, and in the element. And the element right now is …?   soft and weak. You know what? Acknowledge and respect these downsides: their present, being present.

One word that was never spoken.
One light that was never lit up.
An unparalleled confusion.
And a road without end.

What does this mean?   It feels like riding along on an unopened bud. It suggests that everything is yet to find, and as yet unspoken or lit: and this is the Grail Quest through “unparalleled confusion”, opening a road without end.   Inside it, I feel mundane, tired, alone and difficult, but when beheld from outside, it is a glory!   It is the shared odyssey, the mythos: we all are travellers to the dawn.

You see, all things transpire.

All things are sweated into being through the pores of Siva and Parvati’s embrace.   Thoughts are formed. Demons are born.   The Magid – the higher Self – is somewhere near, translating through my veil into the poem – the blessing of life. I live.   We live.

..

Siva and Parvati - Elephanta

Siva and Parvati – Elephanta

..

So I am on the boat, wearing a Horus-falcon headpiece, and steering from the spinal stern.

I am on that treat of a barge: it bears buoyantly the great golden disk of the Sun – a sphere, a golden grail, the inner tuition that Light connects unbrokenly all directions – the photon – and here in my boat which I guide, is its source.   Around me is the boundless sea, breaking foam as in a Japanese painting. And in the ocean’s dark indigo-aqua shadows moves swiftly with me the sea monster who impels and pulses my journey for ever and for ever.   The sound of the sea is all around, and below me is the living Shadow.   ADONAI Thou art God.

The Shadow’s power gives me exuberance and song. Of course it broke my heart, and continues to break it sometimes. The Shadow is yet excellent, leading and bearing my vessel the way the tritons lead the goddess through the billowing seas.   I am proud of my Shadow monster and what we achieved so far.   So weep no more!   We are of the Fabled Ones.   Look all around, at the magnificent sea !

When I talk to people of what’s past, my actual deep urge is to explain how it all became Good.   I don’t know yet how to do this with economy and grace, but I will.   I can cut again a mooring-rope, and travel free with the wind, and see where I was, and be where I am.

I am in the illumined picture from one unknown to another unknown.   I ride the bounding sea. I dance.   I ride the superb monster.

Kabbalah 1989 tree of life painting, showing the KAV or central uniting thread – as above, so below.

In this post I reflect on our Earth-core, magnetic field and aura – some spin-off ideas. She is our real Self; the immensity of the bigger picture. Yet, approaching Her with respect begins effectively in HERE – with you and I.

Malkuth on the Tree of Life is its root:  the Earth, our body and sensory spectrum, the physical universe as far as the Doppler shift.  Malkuth means “Kingdom” but it also means “the Bride”.  Similarly, in the I Ching or Tao,  Earth-Receptive  is feminine to Heaven-Creative.  Through Malkuth/Earth passes our spiritual connection to all the worlds.  That is why Yeshua called it “the Kingdom of Heaven”.

The thread from root to crown, and superimposing the Four Worlds of Jacobs Ladder is called in Hebrew, the KAV.   It centres and earths the polarities, masculine and feminine, of the Lightning Flash.

The Bud is where Wisdom and Understanding  are bridged. Their buddhic bridge is Tarot Key 3 the Empress, Venus. Pregnant in her rose garden with cypress trees and flowing water, she holds her copper dove shield.  The bud is in her belly. The Bread of Life grows vigorously at her feet.

The transpersonal underpinning of Wisdom and Understanding is  the non-sefira Daat. The Daat consciousness opens where the personal I closes. The Daat consciousness opens where the selfish inclination fades out.   “I open where I close” – (J.K.Rowling, The Deathly Hallows.)

..

This implies the difficult transition, or identity shift from small-i to the Greater I … from the limitation of local desires, to the human Collective and its wellbeing. As we individuate, our “I” begins to lose its small patch, and to stand on a far wider field. The seed dies into the sprout of root and shoot.

We are pregnant cells of Adam Qadmon, the Self.

An Image

Yesterday a bolt of lightning struck the Shard in London – the EU’s  tallest Tower of Babel .

This small event gives food for thought.  In the Tarot Key, the Lightning Flash is the Tree of Life, dismantling falsehood, cracking the chrysalis, opening the seed – the energy of Mars. That is the principle.  But on the ground?   That phallic spike creates around its base,  chaotic wind-tunnels – aggressive gusts harry the hurriers and their headaches.   Politics?  – a passing show … a spiky graph nowadays.

Magnetic Field

scarab on granite

What does the word “Gaia” mean? To me, Gaia is planet Earth’s entire connective capillary through the Solar system.   Earth has a vast and tangible magnetic field, rather like a Scarab in shape. It extends roughly to Moon’s orbit, and protects us from solar bombardment:  it is our nest.

Earth's magnetic field

Earth’s magnetic field

I saw last night a TV programme, imagining the inner core of Earth, which generates the field.   They say it is as hot as the Sun’s surface. They believe it has colossal storms, just like the swirling turbulence of the giant gaseous planets. These inner-core storms are the crackling pulse of Earth’s magnetic field. I think we see them flicker in the Northern Lights – the Aurora.

Northern Lights

Northern Lights

Their pulse travels through thousands of radial miles – concentric sheaths of crystal-forest, magma, compressed rock, biosphere and magnetic space.   It travels through me, through you, through everyone unceasingly; but with our adaptation to the pressure, we don’t notice it as shock.  When we begin to work with it consciously, we call it Kundalini Shakti, the Serpent Power.

Crystal forest around the core of Earth

Crystal forest around the core of Earth

I saw also a documentary about human beings who intercept and manifest the Voltage.   They and modern science are ignorant of why or how. It is put it on display for Ooh and AAh.   Unfortunately, no one asked the walking power station (no hair, no sweat glands, and his fingertips are burnt) what being a voltage-transformer actually feels like.   Why not?

Earth's magnetic fields

Earth’s magnetic fields

These are coloured threads or filaments.  Our universe is a waving mass of these living filaments – our psychic energy fields, our physical patterns, our dreams.  This picture reminds me of Don Juan’s teachings to Castaneda.   He said the filaments are everywhere and eternal, and they assemble around human beings as egg-like forms.   The “sorceror’s way” is to see and dance with these filaments, at the borders of our perception.  A “sorceror” may command the position of his assemblage-point, and make it move – but only after he has renounced self-importance and embraced his death.

Unknown

What is the aura?  We are electro magnetic beings, in a temporary lattice of skin and bone and passing garments. The electro magnetism is the template etheric body which doesn’t alter during the lifetime:  the physical body alters and replaces itself, constantly, within it.   The template keeps the physical conformation stable.   It is a blueprint. It has the DNA information, uniquely and intimately coded to Solomon’s lattice.

When I go into myself, and “the current” comes on, it is my electro magnetic river. This (with practice) picks up colour wavelengths to define itself as Aura.   Sometimes, like the Northern Lights, the Aura is coloured, and sometimes it shows silvery white.   To see the Tree in Queen Scale colours, is a way of training:  to channel it. The body of Light has the spectrum embedded.

The Aura/Aurora is a feeling, a sensation. When I was learning astrology, about 25 years ago, I saw and dreamed each night of abstract lines and cylinders in colour, which moved among each other, forming patterns. This faculty afflicts my worldish thoughts and makes them rather tough, like yarrow.

The Aurora/earth core is the sensual consciousness… when standing still.   Inside Earth, the magma sphere is about the size of Mars. Within that, the molten core is about the size of our Moon.

The nesting shapes of Earth, Mars and Moon suggest what? …   a profound resonance with human friction on the surface? Within our planet IS the galactic core, for it has the thermal power of Suns. Some veins in the magnetosphere allow the fire to bleed up into volcanic vents and patterns, and to form the rocky crust, cooled by oceans.  (See Jung’s painting of the serpent fountain tree, at the bottom of this post.)

The Hermetic Table teaches: Veni Interiore Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem. Journey into Earth’s Centre to put your life in balance and find the secret Stone. Meditation and yoga is a simple into-the-planet journey – whichever way it forms itself.

Emerald Table of Hermes

Emerald Table of Hermes

Kundalini is the planetary magnetic current: receptivity to it.   Let the snake uncoil.   On land, they can dig and investigate to about a kilometre below the surface, before it gets too hot. But the ocean depth is nearly ten times that: ten kilometres deep – and down there, supposedly, there is vast dark pressure, but not as heat?

So I picture the thermal mountain ranges through every direction under Earth’s crust, and how these peak under the continents and under every dot and atoll of land: a spiky graph.

Over South America and Southern Ocean, there is a slowly growing area (over the last 400 years) of weakening magnetic field.   It is like an ozone hole.   The Hubble telescope satellite’s instruments turned erratic whenever it orbited over this region.   From Earth’s core the stormy pulses display an altered intensity at this point:   in space the magnetic shield overlying South America is thinner than over any other part of the globe.

The Hubble satellite becomes deranged in the borderline “pocket” because it is exposed to cosmic and solar “hammers”.   It crosses a space where it is not protected.   So its minders devised a solution: they switch off the instruments when it approaches the “hole”, then switch them back on again when it is safe. All around the weakening field, drift bubbles or islets in which earth’s north-south polarity flickers or inverts itself.   As these merge together, the tendency may coalesce.   It is believed that within one to ten thousand years, the poles of Earth will flip – with an immense and inconceivable juddering of the Great Scarab until it settles the other way round.

400 years – the time period of the anomaly so far – roughly approaches the 17th century date when the Aquarian Age is said to have commenced.   Observe, as the magnetic hold weakens over Argentina, humanity’s materialistic acceleration:  the “Age of enlightenment” and consequent consumption and compromise of the biosphere to its use.   Observe climate change and ecological damage as phenomena which include the blind human error, but also vastly precede it, in the way of cycles, and make the error inevitable.  If the error is inevitable, so is the eventual coming into balance.   Nature is equilibrium, a fluid pendulum.   The cosmic Tree sways from side to side.

Our responsibility to what is given us to garden, should recognise the scale in which the problem occurs.   It is not ourselves exclusively. That attitude magnifies the personal ego and its limitation – “mea culpa” does not evolve.

The human challenge offers a greater scale, because we must learn to adapt ourselves to the interplay of cosmic force-fields which appear to speed up and liberate a geological process in this planet.

There is a mass of disturbance and disease. We should lay aside the notion of enmity – in ourselves and to others, and in Nature.   When we talk of “our planet”, we mean the thin rocky crust – our habitation and all we know.  The rest, we infer by analogy (explosive experiments, lenses and graphs.)   We do not know the rest of it, truly, until we look within ourselves, for we are unlimitedly, THAT.  But our knowledge is incomplete.

We  know not more than a cross-section sliver of the truth, until an awareness grows, that the Solar System is not a flat plate, it has the whole shape of an egg: the solar nucleus is wrapped in spherical planes which are particle-waves. The greater part of the planetary orbits – that which is above and below what we map – is invisible to our sensory spectrum; yet its complete perception informs our being.

..

cones

On Parables

The PARABOLA is a section across a cone.  Spacetime diagrams describe the speed of light as a cone flaring from a point.  The speed of light is a constant, whatever position or motion impacts it.  Time and space draw an ascending and descending parabola through the “cone” and they are relative.  Our experience and physicality is a cross sectional curve.

To plot an orbit’s curve, is to state its parable.  Appearances are a conditioned imprint on the retina and the mind.  They are an analogy only – for when Reality enters, predictions based on past experience and conjecture fly out of the window!

The soul Law resolves deep patterns within the self, while appearing to the world as a contribution to knowledge and society (such as Johannes Kepler’s work with the elliptical orbit of Mars, and with his Planetary Laws on which Newton would base his science of gravity. The orbit of a Keplerian planet is not a linear particle travelling around a globe, but a wave of spacetime, standing out from its source.)

An ensouled view that each visible orbit around the Sun could be a section through an oval sphere or egg – a living organism – enhances our life. We have to work at it, against the habitual.   It opens the doors of perception.

wood yantra & birds

Conventional physical science views the solar system on a two-dimensional plane of rings, like a section across a tree’s stem.  A tree cut across presents a concentric plane of rings. However, our imagination embraces the vertical reality intersecting this plane – its shape and centuries of growth.  We reflect on the seasons of its leaves and nestings.  We hear the song of birds, the hosts that populate its limbs.  We sense the roots underground holding the earth’s integrity like a gardener’s hand.  We imagine the oak within the acorn, and even the geological curve from which it springs.  Then we realise we have, in any of our brief time-frames, only a fragmentary view of the evolution of our soul;  and likewise the Solar System and the affairs of our world.

tree yantra '94 - Version 2

To work with the Tree of Life helps to “raise the level” and to overcome the persuasion of being world-helpless.  Raised up we see a little further, and attend a little better to what is real.

Each Sefira of the Tree represents a planetary vibration, resonating human-ness.  The planetary positions echo the concealed “real wave” of the orbital aura enwrapping the Sun.  So I can measure the slice across the egg and get excited, but I can know the egg only by holding, warming and eating it.

Savitri the Mother of the Sun

Savitri the Mother of the Sun

Cultivating this awareness, flat-earth-theory human evolves to “standing human”, and begins to care for all its kind.   The Rebbe Yakov of Prague used to say, that in an almond tree a few buds only will open at first:  but in the whole tree, all are destined to open.  The psychology changes. The human challenge is to keep awake. This is  difficult, but a tiny few can, and maintain a steady proportion throughout our history.

Yeshua “healed the blind”. The human challenge is to open our eyes,  keeping bedrock values open and enduring.

monkey gaia

This is hard, when put to sleep by today’s communication technologies and the entertainment industry.   The monkey mind is on overdrive addiction and stress – a symptom of subterranean acceleration. I am, we are, part and parcel of the acceleration, and our difficulty is to be conscious agents in the swelling wave. Am I in harmony with it, or do I damage my environment?   How does a conscious agent, a particle in the wave, choose, from moment to moment, the hour?   Nothing is in isolation.   Each event essentially, each individual challenge, transmits metanoia – the turning towards the cosmic Divine Pulse.   This is the teacher of history.

To conclude for the moment: this painting (below) is in Jung/Philemon’s series of paintings and Incantations celebrating the primordial Mystery of the Christ child’s birth:

“Set the egg before you,
the God in his beginning,
and behold it,
and incubate it with the magical warmth of your gaze.”

Serpent lava fountain Tree - in Jung's Red Book

Serpent lava fountain Tree – Painting by C.G.Jung in The Red Book

The Incantation here is:

Amen, you are the lord of the beginning.
Amen, you are the star of the East.
Amen, you are the flower that blooms over everything.

Amen, you are the deer that breaks out of the forest.
Amen, you are the song that sounds far over the water.
Amen, you are the beginning and the end.

On Death and the Fire-Bird of Peace

..

Sacred India Tarot 13, Siva & Kali - detail

The Grand Cross easing, opens up for me –  I discover, and so do others – into unimagined joys:  as in a conversation, the other day.

This morning there is white mist, I feel rather damp and warm, the eclipse has passed and I feel better, and now blessed –  a difficult easter it was.  Up at 6 again, even after a long layabed.   Bells ring inside – angelus bells, Liszt’s Angelus, bluebells.   The birds are busy and the morning is quiet.   Adonai, thou art God.

A companion came here last week, wanting to talk.   So he sat down and did.   He spoke for a long time and explored, about Death.  (How harmonised this is, with all the themes of eclipse just now).

You played your inner keyboard, like a jazz musician improvises – death as the existential support of Life.   Not only the violent and tragic deaths, whose martyrs empower survivors; but death as the Now, facing that we die. Each moment we die to ourselves, extends life.  Life is aware and has no limit.

The only way I can recall what you said is to re-enter my inner ear, this morning, and let a kind of translation happen.

..

Time, through day and night, is full of tensions, obstacles, fears, and getting stuck.   Each of these is death – a broken continuity: a cut off point, having to deal with a bill, a loss, or a shock. Or a sudden hurry. Or looking for a letter.   Or stress. Or dislocation and fear before sleep – the lift-shaft drops and jolts. Each time I am absorbed into a fuss, I am clouded over, darkened, and I die.   When I am on autopilot I am dead. Most of us walk around churning the grey stuff, as the living dead.

(Yet the neighbour greets; and we smile, the sun comes through.)

But when I truly die, I open my eyes and there is no die. No dying, ever.   My awareness is not linear, which is the place where we believe in death and stoppages.   My awareness is circular, concentric, a sphere, it is without end, like a wave of sound: Now.   Now.   Now.   What dies in the spreading of the sound?   The player perhaps.   In conscious dying I am every … where without end.   This is so, even in the moment before my body dies, the moment before the silver thread breaks.

There is nothing but awareness of life, in death.   This is the secret of the Self realised sages and the empty Fullness.   They are not on autopilot, nor do they serve time. They are time and space.  They flower, they are ever dying and opening.

Arcanum 13 death:ScorpioThe skeleton moving through Key 13 scorpios is the common ground of us all – our bones.   Death and sexuality pass through each other, because the fertile seed dies to become a tree.   Death and sexuality are simultaneous, as One.   Most human trouble arises through separating them. But sexual feelings are enhanced by death. Wars increase population: the survival instinct.   What is the survival instinct, beyond propagation?   Life, the fact of life, the shine and shrine of life, the inescapable enigma of life with the equally inescapable death: the circling of day and night, the Sun around our Earth.

fishes and lockgate poem

People are deeply afraid that they won’t exist.   When this is severe, they are sometimes helped by being reminded that their actions rippled through other lives (persons) in small consequential changes – the butterfly wing effect continues.   People are deeply afraid that they DON’T EXIST, and therefore have no meaning.   I am afraid I don’t exist in your eyes; this is fear of death?   The pulse of Life insists on cognition and to create. It only has the cognition.

But in my death, EVERYTHING ELSE IS ALIVE!   So what am I?

Fishes, 1988

Fishes, 1988

The automatic reactive mind (the Tree’s feeling-triad, self-image, think and feel) scampers into past and future mode, because when I am quiet, when I am NOW, it dies, and is no longer important. Human mind-life is a running rabbit.   We are creatures of the mind.   But when we come into our embodied centre of gravity, we die and we are limitless.   I AM.

Ramana and Rabbit

..

Most persons believe the embodied awareness – physical consciousness – is around what we do to our bodies, in terms of consuming, exercise, stress, or sloth.   But that is the mind being identified to a Thing. That unconscious attitude drives our body to the grave, as if it is inert and must be chivvied or controlled like a car.

Whereas the embodied spiritual conscienceMalkuth on the Tree (the root) – awakes, respects, and listens to our living, moving earth-body from head to toe, hears and is the cord of gravity, the DNA connection to the stars and – through heart and belly and bum on seat – to souls.

This conscience is not  bothered by diets, exercise, management or medical propaganda.   Sufficient is supplied by nature.   All I do is dance.   I think the root of disease is : if I subconsciously fear my physical texture as an enemy – but that is just my view.  As consciousness, I embody it, right into my toes and fingers.   At any agreed moment I am the fields, the limitless horizon, the halls of wisdom – but only when I am not locked in a pain-box, a worrybox!   That is when I play dead for a time.   Today I am free.

Action.   What is action?   What is right action?

Line-dance, January 1988

Line-dance, January 1988

Always there is movement.   A rock, a stone, is an intensity of sub atomic vibration, and it mutates through geological pulse. Rabbit runs or freezes in the road!

Movement is a book of changes, through the empty capacity which is always full.   The movement is the acceptance of tides of pain through the sea which is free and constantly adapts: the waves break onto the beach.   I am physically not other than the beach, the landscape, the hills, the sea, as I breathe in and out.

My mental life is an imagined and consolidated entity … for a while … considering itself immortal, and fearing the opposite.   But I can choose, at any moment, to imagine and be Gaia, the planet.   What separates planet Gaia from her encircling magnetic field, the Sun, the solar system’s electron orbits, the far constellations?

Yet, how often do I stop my merry-go-round and step into the open point?

"Discovery" - painted at school in 1963

“Discovery” – painted at school in 1963

..

What is right action?   All too often, “right action” is mentally induced, and is disempowered.   Right action waits to be fully informed ; for the wave to form and grow and carry it through. In the Buddha nature, right action surrenders.   Seldom do I have the patience.

But sitting still when something is happening that I love:   this is home. And then it acts.

Self enquiry: who acts?   Who does?  Who dies?

Ramana Maharshi & Arunachala Children

The sage Ramana Maharshi & Arunachala Children

The imagined, personal I is most often in the way.   But if you sing, it gets up and dances, and then it is no longer worried about itself.   You are not a bounded person, but as the universe. You where you come from, are not outlined.

RAMANA

..

Life – existentially – is the flow unbroken.   When you are not there, it is anger and death for a moment.   Continuity and flow are reciprocal, relying on contact and response.   As things are in the human arrangement, we deal constantly with interruptions and hiatus.   Such are the many towered citadels our beliefs built up.   Rabbit scurries in and out of the towers. Rabbit wanted that, so there it is.   One day, rabbit wants and materialises and eats a different landscape. It is all of the mind.   Human habitations, even centuries long, are ephemeral compared with Reality.

Angel with Rabbit

Everything we see is an end-product or effect.   Believing in that effect as permanent, harnesses us to existential death-and-decay – and fear.   We all have it. It is hard wired into our sense of safety. It is in our blood.

But in our blood also, is the edgeless freedom to be.

Then I am free to be the sharpness of sorrow and the fear of death and the anxiety & panic of life, and the trying to act in the right way … equally as the bliss of being, the purity of loving.

Getting lost into any of those, singly, I suppose, is death as it conventionally appears.

Conscious death is an everlasting dying moment. Conscious death passes into infinity.   At the other side of this way of birth, there seems to be a re-formulation into “Am”; only the locus of memory which clustered and entangled that stream of life, is gone, it is a coat taken off.   I think the “Am” looks and sees what the life-strand was – its principle pattern and detail – without the personal memory which flavoured and “determined” it – i.e. was born, got married, gave birth and died.   The “Am” sees and is the whole floating carpet, not just the one thread.

As I sit still and look, I practice this “Am”, for when I die.

I think this is important. The quality of dying reverberates back into, influences and tinctures the whole of life.   Dying is a daily and profoundly fertile practice.

And the word “UNCONDITIONAL” was mentioned: open sesame.

Where rivers cross – as in a Grand Planetary Cross – there is some turbulence:  then the flow continues.

It develops as a conversation, an open sesame.   Back and forth, and the “sesame” or open-ness between, is the shared discarnate Teacher, the magid – the living field where we connect.

My “death” yesterday morning delivered itself, and I no longer needed to talk about it.   I can’t remember today, what it was.   Swim deep, little fish.   To listen and to wait, is to meet, and to unfold.   You are not limited.

Interlude – More Red Book

Jung went into that flowery wooded landscape and met the Red Devil Rider and the Hermit Ammonius, both aged and totally changed and grey! They looked at him with horror.   He looked down at himself and saw he is covered with green leaves. He has become the Green Man.   They called him, “Damned pagan riffraff!”

Sacred India Tarot Buddha Knight of Disks: the Green Man

Sacred India Tarot Buddha Knight of Disks: the Green Man

What a terror early Christianity had, as a jewel – terror of its old gold setting.   The jewel was frightened of the ring.

It insisted on its own tale of death and resurrection, and would blot out every other version if it could.  The decaying and superstitious pair of old glamours blame Jung for his ancient curiousity, for leading them astray.   Ammonius Sacca told him, “Your remark that I probably needed the closeness of men to arrive at the higher mysteries stunned me like infernal poison.   Soon thereafter I called the brothers of the valley together and announced to them that a messenger of God had appeared to me – so terribly had you blinded me – and commanded me to form a monastery with the brothers.”

And so it became organised – a religion.   The holy brothers built their monastery where they could see the ships passing by, and they got intoxicated and muddled with the world.

It is very funny. Ammonius persuaded himself to go to Alexandria to see his bishop, but once there he got pulled into life and got on a boat to Italy, drank wine, wallowed in pleasure and turned into an animal.   When he got to Naples, there on the shore stood the Red Devil – alack, alack, the evil one.

The Red Devil said “Be silent, old fool. If I had not been present you would have become an outright pig. When you saw me, you finally pulled yourself together, cursed the drinking and the women, and returned to the monastery.   Now hear my story, damned hobgoblin …”

I guess from this point, religion and all its prejudices and scapegoats got Organised.

The Red Devil’s story was that Jung introduced him to dancing. So he joined a monastery, fasted, prayed and converted himself.

“In my blindness I wanted to reform the Church liturgy, and with the bishop’s approval I introduced dancing. I became Abbot and as such, alone had the sole right to dance before the altar, like David before the Arc of the Covenant. But little by little the brothers also began to dance; indeed, even the congregation of the faithful and finally the whole city danced.

“It was terrible. I fled into solitude and danced all day until I dropped, but in the morning the hellish dance began again.”

Young Fool with Phoenix - detail

Now I remember more.   The phoenix, the ashes, and death.   The ashes are sorrow and loss. The renewal takes wing and sings and survives as Life through Death.   Without Death there is no Life.

Re Death: see the Katha Upanishad, Juan Mascaro’s translation – the dialogue between Yama and young Nachiketas.   And their picture in the Sacred India Tarot.

Meanings convert fluidly into new versions.   To get stuck in one version is to die, and to deny the river.   When I am stuck in a version, I try to convert others to it – like old religions did.   Some of the early Xians were consumed in their Mystery and its meaning.   Their brief was to change the world. During the middle ages, that belief gained power, wealth, palaces and prisoners.   It stamped furiously on all heresies and Gnostics.

But Yeshua was Gnostic.  He knew.

On Tuesday morning at just after 6am London time, the Sun was eclipsed by the new Moon.  And so the pressure of this rare event – the Easter Grand Cross between Moon and Sun eclipse – begins to ease and release its energy field.   Un-numbered moments of death and birth passed through, and changed their tune.

As waves move through water, all is change, and all is still.

Here is a poem I wrote during a much publicised Solar eclipse, 15 years ago – it felt like acupuncture :

Poem of Eclipse:  Archangelus

Ketu Southnode

Persons who look directly
might be blinded.

Michael’s wisdom sword’s too sharp
for the surface world to bear:
to receive unseen a big black blasting beam of light.

Like a needle
it enters where the meridian discharges.
It may secretly rest.
It is known from beyond the system.

In here,
a littleness oft asleep
into a great snake willingly grows.

The call of the hidden night is the Knight, Self knowing archangel Michael,
slayer of lies.

I recognise and within it, stay.
As it becomes, it disappears;

and do not say the miracle
should happen overnight.
Let the oracle rest inside, to clear
at point of spear… given time.

The sword of Michael archangel is the
serpent seeing itself dispassionately.

In Jung’s Red Book …

“He went into the desert … he wanted to find what he needed in the outer. But you find manifold meaning only in yourself, not in things, since the manifoldness of meaning is not something that is given at the same time, but is a succession of meanings.  The meanings that follow one another do not lie in things, but lie in you, who are subject to many changes, insofar as you take part in life.  Things also change, but you do not notice this if you do not change.  But if you change, the countenance of the world alters!”

Tao Cycle

Tao Cycle

“But I saw solitude and its beauty, and I seized the life of the inanimate and the meaning of the meaningless.  I also understood this side of my manifoldness.  And thus my tree grew in the solitude and quiet, eating the earth with roots reaching far down and drinking the sun with branches reaching high up.  The solitary guest entered my soul.  But my greening life flooded me. jung as hermit

“Thus I wandered, following the nature of the water.  The solitude grew and extended around me.  I did not know how unlimited the solitude was, and I wandered and looked.  I wanted to fathom the depths of solitude, and I went so far until every last sound of life had died.”

.

Our sound of life is the mind, whether open space or crowded. The emptying is filled.

..

“Balance is at once life and death.  For the completion of life, a balance with death is fitting.  If I accept death, then my tree greens, since dying increases life.  If I plunge into the death encompassing the world, then my buds break open.  How much our life needs death!  Joy at the smallest things comes to you only when you have accepted death.  But if you look out greedily for all that you could still live, then nothing is great enough for your pleasure …

“If you accept death, it is altogether like a frosty night and an anxious misgiving, but a frosty night in a vineyard full of sweet grapes.  You will soon take pleasure in your wealth.  Death ripens.  One needs death to be able to harvest the fruit …  Limitation enables you to fulfil your being.”

becoming less,
settling for less,
the fading light –

Grand Easter Cross, Part 4 – Problems

..

Angel with rabbit, 1988

Angel with rabbit, 1988

There is a small green book by the astrologer Roy Gillett called Economy, Ecology and Kindness.  It reviews the major astrological events during the present two decades of Pluto in Capricorn, and its thesis is of turning-point:  it is crucial for “kindness” to begin to pervade governmental and financial institutions progressively, as in our kindred, our relationships and with Nature, at all levels.   Well worth a read.   And kindness begins at home.

I am having quite a hard time just now – unkind to myself –  and serendipitous insights from fellow bloggers give me a real pick-me-up in the morning!   Charlie wrote:  “At what point did kindness fall down, leaving the mind in charge of the rest of an entire life? … At the very bottom of the well there is you and your heart … a sacred temple for one … it matters how you vibrate and hold space.”

And this one, following Katie’s post on our mind as autopilot (see the comments also) – the challenge to discriminate this and to develop conscious creative thought:   “Mind gets on an unhelpful track and runs with it … (It is so helpful to share and realise this) … Every day is another chance to try it out.”

ANY UNHELPFUL TRACK, yes!   I am trying, as all my life, to disconnect from those unhelpful tracks, and reach the kindness in the bottom of the well.   It is hard. There is no success. It doesn’t get better or easier.   Each time the same bleak misery, then identify, name it, and disengage – and glimpse space and truth through the fog – the same struggle. Poor Easter bunny!

Actually I spent the whole of Easter Sunday – after finishing and posting “Magdalene” – in bed (my burrow) reading Joanna Trollope and having short sleeps (by evening I was unhappy again).

Anyway, this is the poor old human condition, and we are in a mess, because we valiantly espouse our UNHELPFUL TRACKS and fervently believe in them.   The problem is my belief in myself being bad. The scolding mother has an embedded authority, and asserts this belief as top news item, come on, don’t tell lies, own up.

On the other hand, the weekend’s Tarot oracles show the lovers, the fool, and strength, they show me pujas and rose gardens, it beams to me the solace and articulate wisdom of fellow bloggers, THIS is real, this is the real condition, not my mental-assertive concrete bits.  Caught between the two, and with pain and grief in my stomach, I yet see my mind’s “unhelpful track” for what it is, ephemeral.  This helps me “lose” its command station, its power over my mood, its way of shutting me down.

But by yesterday evening, I was without community again.   That is what it does.

I am in community again now, thanks to writing, and I note my weakness; the idea I should do or be something bold and strong for Easter Grand Cross Bunny, and Pluto on my Jupiter – I feel actually overwhelmed and disabled by it all.   As a volunteer, I standunder the human condition –  where it lives, where we live in and out of community.   This is a useful definition.

The well - November 2013

The well – November 2013

..

I live alone, and am vulnerable to battle and monitor these states.   That is to say: to endure them, and keep remembering – just enough – to awake from within them; to be kind?   to feel what is true. Kindness and … (visually) broken concrete slabs and landfill – the hard, dead, crumbling rubbish that gets thrown into the well – this and kindness –  kindness is the deep dark water which breathes.   Focus on kindness as “real love”.   Focus the open and never ending story.   Make this thought-form “Accurate, profound, courageous, positive” as Paul Foster Case wrote of Tarot Key 8 Soul Strength.

Change the pattern, and you change the result.

And if I go under and have to keep starting over, this is not failure.   It is work in progress.   It always even if for a brief time each day, awakes.   This is ongoing.

Good meditators and advaitins spurn the mind.   Some people have an ability to set themselves apart from the unhelpful tracks.   I haven’t.   And perhaps it is my nature and my job to suffer them (usually from ‘something I did wrong to someone else’), because dissolving their delusion each time, develops the muscle of what is true.   Like now, I see through the delusion into the kingdom of kindness – the unhelpful track is IRRELEVANT!

There is no fantasy in kindness:  just do and be it.

There is a big insight into why therapy can be for long intervals stuck and unproductive.   It is because the client is churning around and along the unhelpful track … the Great Story Fantasy of Done and Done-to.

The infertile Done and Done-to story fades.   It bears no relation to the light of today, to the river, and to kindness.   The Done and Done-to ethic is contagious through the lower mind in a novel, or something someone says … a collective opinion rules the unhappy roost for a time, until I slowly ignore it and climb out from the slurry.

What is interesting, is how compelling it is.   It fastens on every operating wheel and lever of my mind and mood.   Of course, it is depression.   Depression is when I am cut off from community, from family … in the unhelpful track of me.   Depressives suffer from seemingly massive insights and motor feebleness.   Depression is the magnified self-script and scolding mother – a child too small and exhausted to tidy the house or cheer up or do anything interesting.   See?

Neptune in Pisces; Tarot Keys 12 and 18. This will be the Ascendent here in London when the Grand Cross is in full focus (23 April 4.15 gmt). On the Tree of Life, the Ascendent represents Malkuth, the physical sphere of action, embodiment, materiality, type of birth.   Neptune represents the Godhead, cosmic source.   They combine as the divine thread or KAV, through the Tree of Life:  as above, so below.

Neptune in Pisces! –  sounds mystical, but is actually the Hanging Man’s (reversals and turning-points) Self-surrender within the Moon-child’s journey of embodiment. There is the Self, head down in the well, being born and breaking invisible rocks:  a paragon of high and noble spirituality.

And there are my small-dog personal selves, sent to the bottom of the class to begin their journey again, through the Piscean Path’s snakes and ladders.

But the Self in the well – is where it bottoms out.   All is well.

The Piscean path of the Moon in Key 18 evolves from earliest life forms clambering from the sea – or the desert – to humanity and consciousness.  The sign Pisces rules the feet. The record is kept in that tiny part of our brain, the medulla oblongata, just where the spinal cord reaches the head.   It holds our lizard memory.  The distant mountain is Key 9, the Hermit’s illumination.   And what do the digits of 18 add up to?

Tarot Arcana 4 & 5:  the Emperor (Aries) and the Hierophant (Taurus)

Taurus begins, today and tomorrow.   This thought opens my fire and earth landscape between Aries and Taurus, where I have the North node … the liberating Beauty, its fullness with life and humanity.   Be brave.   Be bold.   Be kind.   The Moon today works through Capricorn.

With these images, the Inner Lover is back, quite physically, through the wood and the well.   The discarnate One is closer than my breath:   I receive. I become still, with the subtle Kingdom in my pulse.   Touch and be touched with the root of the well which is kindness;   move onward with this, keep walking, the Hermit is not on a far distant mountain, his staff is in my hand, and so is his lamp with the Seal of Solomon.

..

So on with the Red Book.

Jung writes:  “The small grains of sand have rolled in fabulous primordial oceans, over them swam primordial monsters with forms never beheld before. Where were you man, in those days? On this warm sand lay your childish primordial animal ancestors, like children snuggling up to their mother.   O mother stone, I love you.   I lie snuggled up against your warm body, your late child. Blessed be you, ancient mother. Yours is my heart and all glory and power. Amen.

“What am I saying …?   — Here the stones form states. … Is it the sun or is it these living stones, or is it the desert that makes my head buzz?”

In the desert there is nothing but prayer, the posture of prayer.

..

He returns to the Anchorite, to the Hermit. He tells him, “Why, all the things that you must experience in the desert, you wonderful man!   Even the stones are bound to speak to you …   although the thirsty desert surrounds us, an invisible stream of living water flows here.” Jung

He tells the Hermit that he is a stranger to the teaching – more foreign than one from Britain’s furthest shore – and has much to learn. The Anchorite tells him he “found inexpressible words to greet the break of day: let the heathen prayer to Helios suffice; be astonished at nothing, and in no sense condemn or regret it.   Let us go to work.”

The Anchorite (who is Ammonius Sacca) goes on to tell how he himself was freed from the awful predicament of spinning words – the days when he was a famous university lecturer in Alexandria.

 ..

The Scarab is a classical rebirth symbol. In my own light: the desire is to honour a Mystery effectively, to worship it well in its moving parts.   When I fail in any part of this, I suffer until the imprint fades. I suffer as an artist, getting the painting wrong.

The Greater Mystery of Life does not oblige me to be happy or sad. Those are adjuncts and adjectival only. The Greater Mystery does not mind how long my route turns around it, for it is timeless.   My Grand Easter Cross produces the scarab, and symbols of birth and death and second-birth, and planting flowers in the garden, and the word “COMMITMENT”.

In my desert I discover a greater commitment perhaps, and realise my faith is to my interior, and it doesn’t matter if it cannot or should not be told.   In the same instant of in-turning to source, is the outward flowing NOW, the connective fibre with the human family, as given.   The situation is so simple.

..

Thus, for me, the Grand Cross resets my commitment, the same way as a home-hub modem is reset, by turning it off, then on again; or a piano is re-tuned.   The resetting recurs again and again in life, but is likely to be profound during a major astrological event.   And in the resetting is the soul’s dark night, a little death: paralysis for a while.   A fixed patter dies.

Dies Irae – from the deep we cry to thee.

The Desert Rose

..

Hermit, Arcanum 9

Hermit, Arcanum 9

What is the desert? the innate way of unfoldment: truth.

In the Red Book, Jung journeyed and wrote: “Walking around in a circle I happen to return to myself and to him, the solitary one, who lives down in the depths hidden from the light, held securely by the warm bosom of the rock, above him the glowing desert and sharp resplendent skies.

“The solitary lives in endless desert full of awesome beauty. He looks at the whole and at inner meaning. He loathes manifold diversity if it is near him. He looks at it from afar in its totality. Consequently silvery splendour and joy and beauty cloak diversity for him. What is near him must be simple and innocent, since close at hand the manifold and complicated tear and break through the silvery splendour.”

..

There follows a long poem with expanded script, in which the magid, Philemon or Ammonius Sacca speaks:  (see italics)

“The sun and its glow nourish him … the solitary loves the desert above all since it is a mother to him, giving him food and invigorating warmth at regular intervals.”

Thus also the interior sun of the soul.   I have mist on my window. I am dull this morning, and out of relationship.   I have nothing and am uneasy with what I have.   Yet I know it is condensation on the window, which blurs life, and the sun – Great SOLomon – will clear it as he rises. The creatures and the histories of the soul wake up slowly, and give the prospect some positive meaning.   The soul is a full engagement with everything.   I think this defines the soul.   With the waking up there is a deepening of the mirage, and some change of key.

The thin Hermit in his hut with his book and the heat, wanders in an orchard of lush fruit and flowers, all reaching for his hand, his breath. He engages with the desert.   “Fragrant resins drip from his trees, and under his feet, thrusting seed breaks open.

..

I engage with North London. It is the poetry of life in whatever medium.  Sometimes the poet over-reaches, fantasises and falters. The poet has an ethical task, to remain where it is real, and to question every surplus.   The poet has an ethical task: to not invent.   Invention turns to mist on the window.

..

I think for human default mode generally, “the horror of the desert and its withered evaporation …” permeates the conventional stress of livelihood, entertainment and mortgage.   For the hermit in the Libyan desert or in North London … “he stammers when he speaks of the indescribable fullness, his eye rests on the garden, his ears listen to the source, his breath draws in sweet perfume from blossom rich trees.” …

..

..

I see the hermit in the midday sun, in the deep shade of his tent or hut, with book and abundance: the ferocity of the dry heat, the ringing silence, his parched limbs, the rustlings.   I see human security which seeks above all else to cover my head with a roof and a story.   The stories in our souls are read to us at bedtime, to keep us covered and safe.   The hermit falls into a place where he cannot write any story at all; there is no room for it.   The sea in my face is a desert.   From the desert all things come.   In the desert is the well, and the camel drinks.

There are many sounds in the desert – of the soft mother, the wind; and of cracked insects and darting lizards.   There is the endless sound of space. This is the fruit the Hermit hears.   HERE.

Hear it through the trains, the passing cars, the songbirds in the budding trees. All of London is the sound in this corner of it which is silence: this window on which a Rune is drawn in the dew: my body’s unending kiss with gravity.

Are not lovers the gravity with each other? Is not the Hermit the gravity with God?   In this mode the thought with the beloved is gravity.   The Hermit’s daily dawn footprints through the silver dunes are blowing in the wind.   Their edges soften, but he walks some more, and again next day.   There is always the trace of his passing, and the wanderer finds it, follows the thread to the web’s gossamer centre, follows the Sun’s rays inwards, becomes still and is blessed.   The Question is left open.   The wanderer abandons the answer he or she seeks.

“He gives you a small insignificant fruit, which has just fallen at his feet. It appears worthless to you, but if you consider it, you will see that this fruit tastes like a sun which you could not have dreamt of. It gives off a perfume which confuses your senses and makes you dream of rose gardens and sweet wine and whispering palm trees. And you hold this one fruit in your hand dreaming, and you would like the tree from which it grows, the garden in which this tree stands, and the sun which brought forth this garden …

..

Adam & Eve detail

..

“And you yourself want to be that solitary who strolls with the sun in his garden, his gaze resting on pendant flowers, and his hand brushing a hundred fold of grain and his breath drinking the perfume from a thousand roses.

“Dull from the sun and drunk from fermenting wines, you lie down in ancient graves, whose walls resound with many voices and many colours of a thousand solar years.

“When you grow, then you see everything living again as it was. And when you sleep, you rest, like everything that was, and your dreams echo softly again from distant temple chants.

“You sleep down through the thousand solar years, and you wake up through the thousand solar years, and your dreams full of ancient lore adorn the walls of your bedchamber. You also see yourself in the totality.”

Sacred India Tarot Arrows – Transition

..

Sacred India Tarot - Pages of Arrows - Version 2

In some ways, my process with the Arrows, in my inner and outer life, is the deepest yet. The Arrows are of “confrontation” and its passage into peace.

Sacred India Tarot 10 of Arrows - Version 2

Touching on the 10 of swords is nadir – I feel that resonance the collapse of the seed and civilization, for the new growth and transmission.   King Bheeshma dies – he gives his Arrow of knowledge and wisdom to the young Yudishtara.  Rock bottom: from the old as it dies, is planted the new.   It is in the martial art movement, an empty leg with the fullness of the ground flowing into it.   In my painting of 10 of Swords, the old King dying on the Arrows along his spinal chakras, uplifts his nobility into the compassion of the new King’s listening face.

In the Sacred India Tarot facebook page yesterday, Rohit mentioned:
In traditional Tarot this is rock bottom, but in yoga that is also understood as the beginning of a new cycle.
Bheeshma failed, but the knowledge and wisdom he accumulated was passed on so that Yudhistara could succeed. Hence the personal failure did not count as much as the societal gain in the end…”

..

The Fool in the Tarot, is known in our Sacred India Tarot deck as “the wild card”.  This is because the archetype comes through the primordial Wild Hunter, the divine Rudra, fore-runner of Siva.

Every innocent Fool – or Wild Hunter –  embarks upon an adventure!   Each soul who embarks upon an adventure is a Fool!   The Fool is the entire Tarot – the space between the lines.   Pretty soon, the Fool meets the Magician and the (subconscious feminine) Priestess, who contains him, and reveals in succession, Empress, Emperor, and Hierophant;  his sense of proportion returns.

This was the unpublished version of Rudra - the Fool or creative principle of the deck

This was the unpublished version of Rudra – the Fool or overall creative principle of the deck

The Fool begins the journey in an exciting mist.   As the sun rises and gains strength, the landscape and its mountain peaks and chief features, appear.   Human are we, everlastingly.

But I want to reflect on the 10 of Swords as I am passing through.   The nadir (at any point) is reached when a situation overwhelms me.  I lose my vital force and die.   Dying, I wait latent for the daffodils to appear.

Psychologically, the 10 of Swords carries remorse and new intention.   We all get it repeatedly in our lives.  This Key is hard, but it is a good one.   When we are overwhelmed, we are obscured and off balance.  But the “overwhelming factor” is self-correcting in the Tao.  When Yang is saturated, when it is filled, it converts to Yin, and vice versa.  This movement ever oscillates and stretches, concludes and opens.   I am the pebble which is rolled in the river bed.

Truth is the blank, the empty room’s passing;  be still and honour it, this morning.

So:  the feeling this morning.  Stasis, empty room, and sorrow.  Not about anything particular.  Sorrow is an essential part of the mix;  like rain in the sky.   Sorrow is awareness, and this feels good and right.  It breathes its own pulse.   It is love which is object-free;   it is the soft talk of the stream that flows on the mountain.   I give my sorrow time and space.  It cleanses, after each “overwhelming” or flood of the Fishes in Tao.   It makes slow Ch’i movements with a candle flame.   Nurture the rich field of sorrow, the empty fullness – the Fool in sacred space.  Alone in the oscillation, is life.  The Swords which move it, are the discipline of the Work:  the dance form.   This is what I love.

..

Sorrow is a form of the Sword.   I found, to illustrate the “Han” part of my previous post, this photo online of two Tao gentlemen on a sea-beach:  one of them just tossed the other lightly upside down, and he cartwheels – they wear flowing white jackets and black flapping trousers, they make a Tao symbol.  They are not doing the Sword form, but the Sword form is based on the flow around Tan t’ien in the belly.

What is Sword Form?   What is the Tao chi?   What is citta (sanskrit)?  It is total concentration on Life – just as a woman in utmost labour is concentrated.   It is a difficult art to get it right;  but keep practicing with this Sword – and “no blame” as those Oriental gentlemen would say (whenever it obsesses a bit).

Centrifugal Yang through Yin - sketched from "The Trigrams of Han" by Steve Moore

Centrifugal Yang through Yin – the “destruction cycle’ sketched from “The Trigrams of Han” by Steve Moore.  Fire melts metal which cuts wood which uses earth which drinks water … which puts out fire.

..

In Kabbalah practice are very high ideals when the “concentration” surges.   Pleasure-seeking Yesod child in due course pulls it down to the consumer level, where it breaks up – and clings to the bits of wet bread, and weeps with being abandoned, and the job yet again, to get out of the fix.

But the beautiful balance – being Empty for the Full – always returns.   Each time there is a little more learning.   There is wood to cut and water to gather, as before.

And returning to the space:  as De Ruiter would say – let it be tenderly obvious and obscure.  The values of life are in the illumined empty-full:  the attendance on the tendency … the fluid point between those gentlemen on the beach:  between the waves.  We are all of a waveband.

Rohit and I are students of Jung.  To some extent, Jung seems to have directed our project, The Sacred India Tarot, which bridges the spiritual traditions and their archetypes, for he crops up in my journal over the years, whenever it became intense.

At about this point in our Archive, the Suit of Arrows changes its tone.  The battle is complete, with the Ten of Arrows;  a new realm opens, as the instinct to make war transforms to “martial art”.  Intuitively, the Swords/Arrows change to Rods or Wands – the coming Suit of Staves.  The Wand or Stave is actually the Caduceus, serpent twined – the authority by which Moses struck water from the rock.

In the seminal Red Book, Jung’s journey with Elijah and Salome continues:

jung as hermit

jung as hermit

Footnote: “Now I learn that Mary is the mother, the innocent and love-receiving, and not pleasure who bears the seed of evil in her heated and seductive manner.  If Salome’s evil pleasure is my sister, then I must be a thinking saint, and my intellect has met with a sad fate. …  Salome as Elijah’s daughter, is an offspring of thought, and not the principle itself, which Mary the innocent virgin mother, now appears as.”

And:  “The image of the cool starry night and of the vast sky opens up my eye to the infinity of the inner world, which I as a desirous man feel is still too cold.  I cannot pull the stars down to myself, but only watch them.  Therefore my imperious desire feels that world is nightly and cold.”

He refers to abstract perception, and to the refining of his desire.  For most of us, the refinement does not nourish us, until we are willing to wait upon it in our empty-full.   Then it becomes a nectar waterfall.  It is the fulfilment of humanity’s higher Self – everything else is starvation, really.   Our origin is this element.

Jung's painting of himself with Elijah and Salome in the Red Book

Jung’s painting of himself with Elijah and Salome in the Red Book

The chapter in the Red Book titled “Resolution” witnesses a struggle between doubt and desire:  the prophet bids him desist from climbing the high ridge of a rock which separates day and night.   To the right of the rock is a black serpent, to the left, a white one.   (Goodness, those Oriental gentlemen again !)  They pounce and wrestle terribly.

caduceus

“The black serpent seems to be stronger, the white serpent draws back.  Great billows of dust rise from the place of struggle.  But then I see: the black serpent pulls itself back again.  The front part of its body has become white.  Both serpents curl about themselves, the one in light, the other in darkness.”

He thinks it over, and asks Elijah – “Should it mean that the power of the good light will become so great that even the darkness that resists it will be illumined by it?”  For answer, Elijah takes him to the high place and stands upon the altar Stone:  “This is the temple of the sun.  This place is a vessel that collects the light of the sun.”

Then the prophet climbs down, becoming smaller and smaller until he is Mime the dwarf in the Ring Cycle.  Mime shows Jung the wellsprings of the deep.  “The collected light becomes water and flows in many springs from the summit into the valleys of the earth.” He dives into a dark crevice, and Jung follows him, hearing the rippling of a spring.  “Here,” says Mime “ are my wells, whoever drinks from them becomes wise.”

But Jung is scared, and he goes outside his house and walks up and down in his yard, in the full bright air of his interior vision, the cave.   Before the vision of the snakes, he had a block, and couldn’t descend:  his normal procedure would not descend.   He realised he had a conflict in himself about going down, and it took the imaginative form of two dark principles fighting each other, the serpents.

Caduceus on the tree of life. The lower figure was drawn with both hands simultaneously, exercising both sides of the brain - without leaving the paper.

Caduceus on the tree of life. The lower figure was drawn with both hands simultaneously, exercising both sides of the brain – without leaving the paper.

In The Ring cycle, Mime the master craftsman, brought up Siegfried in the cave, to kill the dragon giant Fafner who stole the ring.  Siegried slays Fafner with Mime’s INVINCIBLE SWORD, gets the ring(?) and kills Mime who had intended to kill him.

It sounds like the transfer of the power in the 10 of Swords, in Mahabharath.  All mythologies bear the human tale.  It includes precognition and betrayals.  In Jung’s journey, the dwarf Mime represented the allure of the ‘clever’ intellect, untempered by the laws of love.

In the 10 of Swords, the old King’s “overwhelming” transforms to Consciousness, as the blades enter his awakened Kundalini spine:  the feeling is no longer pain.   It yields.   Knowledge happens when tension against it drops.  The snakes enter me.  I enter the snakes.  We flower, as the room is opened.

I now discover, the Royals – Page, Knight, Queen and King of Arrows – are all of a piece with these perceptions.

..

The Pages move together in alert reconciliation.  They are Archers, but the truce between them is a Sword.  This card recalls the 2 of Arrows, where the young Bheeshma in training to become a warrior, fights with his teacher.

Hanuman the monkey god, crossing the sea to jewelled Lanka to help Rama rescue Sita – (in the Suit of Wands/Staves) – carries a rosebud and displays great mental and intellectual energy.   He is of a par with the agile chessboard Knight’s lateral thinking, where everyone else travels in straight lines.  He is our wonderful servant;  but let him not become the dark dwarf Mime.  The dwarves in the underworld play the market with cunning, but do not release their treasure.

Queen Draupadi is a wild dark huntress, like Diana in the west – a formidable encounter for any unprepared male.  Note the snake around the sinuous tree.  The publishers of the deck requested she wear pantaloons, respecting the conventions in contemporary Indian art;  but here is the original drawing.

The King of Arrows is Garuda, who was half an eagle.  His human face is a double eagle, as in alchemy.  The eagle’s vision flies as high as the serpent travels deep.  Advised by the Lightning god, Indra, Garuda is a great ruler.   He balances Planet Earth lightly on a feather, raises his arrow like the Queen of Justice in the west, and contains his ojas.
Before him, the Caducean pair of serpents rest on the ground, entwined.

We will discuss these cards more fully in the next SITA posts.
